It's hard to imagine reasonable explanations for such suicidal business "decisions" by WGT - they either want to close their business and cash out whatever assets they have or want to shake up the community by getting rid of the main credit "earners" (i.e. top players), which would temporarily ease the competition, but I can't see what purpose that could serve in the long term...

Whichever the case, with this WGT did some really irreparable damage to their reputation (like US govt infighting leading to business uncertainty and credit rating downgrade :)). They attacked the principle of legitimate expectations and now people won't be playing seriously and consistently towards a long term goal (like a gift card or a set of clubs) that could take them 1 or a few years to achieve, because they experienced that half a year or a month before actually reaching the goal, it could be sneaked away from them. Although a "net earner", I thankfully wasn't anywhere close to such a goal, but I can't imagine how pissed must be the people who were there 70 or 90% (well, they will probably still have a chance to get a cap, a shirt and a towel with logos of their beloved company :))

As things stand, after finishing the entered tournies, I will be quitting active play (which likely, given the recent trend of developments, is permanently). I wanna thank everyone - it was a nice and fun experience, and since I'm a mostly self-taught beginner in real golf, it helped me learn some useful concepts and develop intuitions. Most importantly, I got an insight how such communities function, what role different kinds of rewards have, what motivates people, etc.  that I hope to apply to my business/community project (which has nothing to do with golf, but which will hopefully be more long-term oriented, stable and socially sensitive than what we have here...) I hope other WGT community members will use their experience and try to implement their ideas too, perhaps leading to a good competitor for WGT.

    So, hf and gla folks!

    Well said

Speaking as the owner of TCC which has as members many of the top WGT players, there is a real risk that a whole bunch of this site's top players will walk away from the game.

These players have made a massive contribution over the years to make this game what it is.

These guys and gals have devoted so many hours to this game building up credits to exchange for something worthwhile, and now they are left with little incentive to play long hours, and they may as well give their credits away now.

WGT is probably not making any $$s from these top players that can afford gift cards so they are basically shafting them, and killing their rewards to boost company profits.

It will be a real shame to see a lot of the respected 'big names' leave the game.

These people have achieved this status through dedication and skill, and WGT clearly has no regard for their efforts by making their credits worthless overnight.  The new 'elite collection' is a joke and WGT should be embarrassed at the prices for virtual gifts. And the golf round prices are crackers!

Bring back gift cards please and get rid of the stupid prices for virtual avatars!

Don't go down this direction WGT otherwise you will kill the desire to play this game at the highest level.

    Stay real.

    Darren

They are making $$ for sure, think of all the balls they buy and all the rake from RGs and MPCs... Of course none of them puts money in the game any more but they take it from others and put part of it (20% on each occasion) directly into WGT's bags: These credits are out of circulation, gone forever!

Plus, the challenge to play the top guns and the chance to win a gift card eventually (and potentially) keeps the wheel turning IMHO. Anybody who stands up as an opponent for credits supports this wheel.

There must be some other thoughts involved which we do not see.

Perhaps it's even more profitable to evacuate the top floor of players to give room to others? Two average Legends in my CC with about 64 avgs have won RGs this week - perhaps this brings fresh money to the game?

Perhaps it's neccessary to get rid of memories - create the future without the past?

Perhaps it's an adaption to some gaming laws making the game more profitable, supporting it's growth?

Perhaps there's a third party demanding certain changes?

We'll never know, while the company keeps the ventail shut.

I am getting an uneasy feeling when Pizza says things like this:

     WGTpizza:

A lot of very valuable feedback is going in to this thread. Thank you, everyone, for conveying your messages in an appropriate manner.

I want everyone to know this thread is being read by WGT.

    Stay classy,

    -WGTpizza

It makes me think twice about voicing in the forums about getting rid of credits on the black market and gifting credits in the form of clubs balls etc. If this is picked up by the big boys sat in their ivory towers what do you think will happen to this option as well. I bet those are the only parts of this post that they are reading and rubbing their greedy little hands together saying, '' We can put a stop to this as well.''

They will do anything to stop the credits recirculating without the members putting their hands in their own pockets and forking out hard earned MONEY to get the equipment they need.

Be careful what you say in the forums. Big Brother is watching................

    This is WGT's website: wgt.com

I'm not clear as to how one could reasonably compare employees/owners of a website who may or may not read postings to their own website with Big Brother.

The rule I've used when posting to any message board since I started doing so some 15 years ago is - if I wouldn't care to share the information with anyone and everyone, I don't post it.

I agree that folks who are doing something that might be considered unethical or illegal (this isn't me passing judgement on anyone here, but rather a broad spectrum statement) probably shouldn't inform on themselves. Kinda like sh*tting where one sleeps, yes?

Was up with a sick child the other night and my mind wandered to WGT. Yes, I know...I need to get a life =).

However, the thought struck me that perhaps it is in WGT's best interest that the top players decrease or eliminate their participation.  It would be interesting to see the WGT usage supply and demand curve. It is feasible that newer players trying to gain skills and credits in this game might be heavily discouraged when seeing the same list of names continually winning prizes and atop the leaderboards.  This might cause them to quit as it seems unrealistic they would ever achieve such accolades.  If there were more of an even playing field, then perhaps players would feel more incentive to invest in equipment, balls, etc... Such measures might move the demand curve up. Just a thought.

On another note, I had a brilliant idea for the $300k avatar. Make it truly customizable and it might be fun enough to be worth it.  Meaning, you could make some guy in a ribbed tank top and cut off jeans with tattoos all over. Or better yet, we could make a lingerie clad Megan Fox avatar for playing with.  Let's make lemonade out of lemons people!!

    I really need more sleep.

I hear your thoughts about the interest curve!

    Fortunately, it's 500k credits not $$  :)

The only thinkable justification for 5.000 $ would be a truely customized avatar, "hand-crafted" to the customers' wishes: designed individually, no, unique in figure, skin (including tattoos), hair, face, clothing (each visible item), accessoires. Someone might have the desire to let Tiger or Elvis or Mrs. Bardot or even himself play the game on his screen...

It could be that they try to "get rid" of top players to make the competition more feasible, for example by taking away gift cards and putting up some smaller things, and perhaps adding something more worthwhile later, when these top players "forgot about the game", but if they think they'll succeed in fooling them, they're hopelessly naive. I'm pretty sure many of the top players are really smart guys, likely smarter than folks in the WGT management, so good luck with that :)

I'll just say this - when people get used to getting something for free or even earning money, there is no way they will EVER be willing to pay for that same thing, unless forced at a gunpoint or if its something vital. So if and when any meaningful prizes come back to the game, those people will be back too, and plus, being fooled last time they will not buy WGT branded accessories out of respect or promote the game in a wider community, not even mentioning stuff like silly avatars for 300k.

Btw, there are zillions of ways to make the game more affordable and motivating to average/above-average users, like taking less rake and changing prize distributions, especially in country clubs, including more free tournies with meaningful (but still small) prizes that not just superstars and sandbaggers can win, finally, including much more randomness like variable wind, less accuracy, occasional failed shots even if dinged (which, surprise surprise, would actually make the game much more realistic).
