The thread title is just asking for a "That's what she said!"  reply.

These are march stones which used to mark the course boundaries in ancient times. Just google "march stones st andrews old course".

Don't listen to this lot, they know nothing.

St. Andrews dates back to the early 1400's, and back then the average size of a man (women weren't allowed to play back then) was a lot smaller than today.

So they used to stand on the stone so as to be able to see the pin.

And then they could get an accurate measure with their GPS distance finders.

That particular marker is hollow, I have hit a shot landing just to the right end of it, and have been able to look right through it like a hollow log. I'm tempted to believe it may be some type of alien artifact, perhaps a portal to another St. A's . Doc :)

Those stones represent failed attempts to erect circles of monuments to sun worship by very small Druids.

there is 1 by the green on 17

That one is a marker for #18 tee.

The one on #5 is an old time ydg marker: 250 to green center.

I'm afraid this is not correct. It's a march stone (estate boundary marking), as stated in some places in the internet and in the stroke saver booklet which I have in my hand.

The ydg to the front of the green is 216 for this one on #5 and 98 for the one on #7, in the rough.
