Accused of sandbagging

    I hear the term sandbagging so often thrown around this site...I still am not sure what it means.

    It means to hide one's true playing potential to gain some advantage in the game.

    In WGT, the classic example is an experienced player appearing at a non-corresponding low tier, with a voluntarily high average. He will use his skills to beat others from the front tees and thus gain credits in challenge matches or finish high in RGs.

    It's also frequently viewed as sandbagging when a player has a high level allowing access to high-class equiment while being in a relatively low tier. While it IS a possible way of getting the same advantages as above, it's also probable that a player hasn't cared for his tier and average and has played mainly other games than strokeplay.

    All this is within the rules of the game, even if so. starts a new account from scratch. There is no obligation to play strokeplay and none to play to one's skills. The only legal cheat against WGT's terms&conditions is to use more than one account at a time. Thus, sandbagging is more a question of ethics and sportsmanship than a legal subject. Add that this is not a sport but a computer game...

    Of course it's easy (and cheap) to accuse the opponent for sandbagging to hide the own deficits leading to a lost match.

    Before, it was possible to stay in one tier simply by not playing ranked strokeplay. The steady protest and - presumably - considerations of their own benefit have eventually lead to WGT's anti-sandbagging measures which are to include credit wins and matchplay wins against higher tiers in the tier promotion calculus. This diminishes the chances to take profit from said tier sandbagging. The disappearing of the Gift Cards might be a further measure in that direction, taking away a major target of such greedy demeanor.
