The OP has starter clubs and ball. The answer is actually no. The amount of spin cannot be increased with the clubs and ball in use. With the Starter Gear you have to land short and play the ball to roll up.

    jbert1949:

How can I get more backspin on the ball. Hitting greens pretty solid, but too much roll.

    Thanks

    Jim

you can't there's no spin on the free crap,
you'll have to hit it a bit softer so it doesn't roll as much,
also avoid places like bethpage oakmont and olympic,
stick to s. andrews & kiawah until you get some clubs with actual spin

I was playing a game the other day with a Callaway ball, my last of that type and didn't want to replace it.  Unfortunately do to a brain fart on the 10th hole at Merion I hit my driver instead of my 3 Wood and lost the ball.

I was moved back to starter balls and had to finish the round with them.  I have the high level R11 irons and I was taken back by how well the balls worked with those clubs.  The huge draw back is the meter speed of course and I was often late, to the point where I start to play my shot expected to be late.

The wedges that I have are the Clevelands and even with no backspin and starter balls they would often hit and come back a few feet.  I generally don't use any spin on the wedges because it can be too severe, uphill into a wind with full b/s can come back off the green.

So to the OP, you can actually back the ball up with starter balls and the Cleveland wedges, the key though is knowing what spin to use on them.  T/S can gain you a few yards as well.

I just decided to take advantage of the free rental this weekend and rent a MAX SPIN 64 wedge to see if I could get any back-spin. I have basically used some very cheap upgraded clubs along with starter putter along with 10 pts sleeves of WGT B-XD balls and never had a hint of backspin.

After a few practice shots, I played a round on SA where I was left 55 yds from the hole on #3. Played to just past the hole with backspin selected and amazingly hole the shot for an Eagle.

This morning some 20 hours later my free rental expired and I decided to splurge and buy the club at the 10% discount.  I started a round on Pebble beach 1. Left around 60 yds from the hole with a tailwind, I played for just above the hole with some small backspin. You guessed it. Backed in for another Eagle.

Now I did put in a couple of hours of practice using the new wedge and found it fun, but  have not figured out solid consistency, but hopefully that will come with more practice. What does bother me a bit is that it seems to back-up to different degrees no matter where i spot the hit point at the end range of the club. Even if I place it at the top at best on a flat surface it just stops within a foot. . Which of course makes it impractical to hit with an expectation of running a few yards.

Point of this post was not a sales pitch for the wedge, just that it is the club, not the ball that dictates back-spin. I haven't tried it with a basic starter ball, but I see no reason why it won't work. The WGT B-DX balls I am using have the same "0" spin rating that basic starter balls have.

    Hi ThR

Exactly right, I've found myself in the same situation. After an unfortunate *SPLOSH*, I was back on the rocks. The top TM ATVs can back up a rock provided it's not too tricky. I played in an Alt shot game yesterday and someone was using the 64cr wgt balls. They performed just as well as my volviks and the Callys that were being used. Impressive to watch.

Combine a type of ball with your clubs and after time it's almost as if the ball's on a string. By using less b'spin it rolls a bit more, out to it's max. I found that Nike balls want to spin back if you look at them, so started using Lvl 33 Callys. very controllable. Experimenting now with the Volviks. They have a spin rating of 4.0 and together with my RSi2 s (spin rating of 4.5) you can put a ball next to the hole and get it to back out again maybe quicker than when it went in! Control is the key.

Oakmont CC Par4 7th hole. 170yds, downhill with a light tailwind.

I wanted this one to get near and stop, not go careering off into the scenery. Downhill it's easy to watch them fly in all directions, so in it comes, lands and hops back a way. You can put everything into the shot because you know exactly how the ball will behave. (ding permitting of course)

This one's St Andrews. The Par4 7th hole. Second shot. Into the wind. I wanted to make sure I reached the pin but not go too far past. It'll give you an idea of how much you can get if you want it.

RSi 2 and a Volvik backing up fast.

I'll admit, surprised me a bit.  It's all about control though. Lose that and it's very likely you'll lose the ball too.

    Happy hitting, Cheers

    Rich

Would someone please explain how, when a ball is hit with full back spin, lands 15-20 short of the hole, manages to roll 10-12 past the hole. I thought the whole idea of spin, was to get the ball closer to the hole, any ideas, anyone?

Didn't you read the thread from the beginning?

Your description fits well to your low budget wedges. L40ish ATVs may help, but you better get the REAL deal with the top wedges as described before.
