The WGT game parameters are set up so that we cannot hit a driver off the deck.  Oh we can try... but then disappointment sets in.  You'll be lucky to get 150 yards on a perfect swing.

Not so. in my G10 days after making Legend, only way to get on the green into nasty wind at SA17 was a punch driver off the fairway.

Point well taken.  I have not tried the driver punch.  And different drivers may give different results.

How did you bend it around the bunker???

I used to have the replay saved, but deleted it...IIRC I was about 215-220 from the hole into a high 20's wind, punch landed well before the green, rolled up nice and curled around the slope near the pin..it may have kicked through the 20/25 to get to the green, can't remember..dang I wish I'd still had that replay!

You can punch the driver off the deck but you can't really hit the driver off the fairway unless you punch it.

Mixed results in my opinion, the 3 wood is a better option.

Years ago you hit hit the driver off the fairway very well but for the most part the newer drivers just aren't made to hit off the fairway. To get a good strike on the ball you have to hit the ball closer to the top of the club face with the newer drivers and you can't do that off the fairway. That's why the tees keep getting longer and longer as the driver faces get bigger and bigger. The optimal spot to hit the ball well keeps getting higher and higher.Find a good shallow face driver with a low optimal spot to hit the ball and you can hit the ball quite well off of the fairway but the new drivers have just too deep a face to be effective off of the fairway.

Punching the driver keeps it nice and low so you can scoot it under trees.replay.aspx?ID=b0d70cee 0eab 48b7 903c a1990080962e

Shot, Courteney! Perfect aim between the roughs!

BTB: It may be easier with a smaller head - I think the Pros prefer them(?), yet it's feasible with the big bombs, too. I recently hit a nice 200-yarder with my Burner. My record is three driver shots on one 580 yds Par 5: a shortish tee shot, a nice second to the 200 m (220 yds) mark, and another one into the bushes :(

At least, club selection is easy that way :))
