goldeena: Niklaus wouldn't have even made the cut today so you can't even begin to start saying 'Jacks record', just accept it for what it was - fairy impressive for amateur sports achievements of that time............
ROFLMAO.
During his career on the PGA Tour, Nicklaus holds the record for major championships with a total 18. He has the third most PGA Tour victories with 73, behind both Tiger Woods, with 77 and Sam Snead with a total of 82. Nicklaus also holds the outright record for the most wins at The Masters with six, and The Players Championship with three.
He played on six Ryder Cup teams, captained the team twice and the Presidents Cup team four times, and topped the PGA Tour money list and scoring average eight times each.
For 24 straight seasons, from 1960 to 1983 inclusive, he made at least one top ten finish in a major championship, and this is a record.
^^ Amateurish you say ^^^
you are joking right?
you should also realise Nicklaus's US Open scoring record of 272 stood for 31 years until Rory Mc shot 268 to win it in 2011. Jack's scoring record speaks for itself regardless of who he competed against.
had Jack Nicklaus been 3 shots in the lead on the final day, I don't think Phil would have picked up the Claret Jug regardless of his outstanding final round.
also......on a final point. don't be fooled into thinking just because a golfer is an amateur that they wouldn't be able to live alongside the pro ranks in competitions because they can. amateur golfers can choose to remain amateur for many reasons and NOT because they're not good enough to turn pro. Nicklaus almost stayed amateur so he could pursue a career in pharmacy. Tom Watson graduated from Stanford with a degree in Psychology.
I often wonder how many potentially great US golfers didn't make the step up to pro due to pursuing careers more important to them after graduating through college similarly to Nicklaus & Watson. For sure there will have been quite a few.
Justin Rose finished 4th in the 1998 British Open as an amateur and 19 yr old Matthew Fitzpatrick finished this year's Brit Open in joint 18th place as an amateur. Even China's Guan Tianlang who played in this year's masters at only 14 yrs old put in a decent performance. These are only a few examples of the many.
