had Jack Nicklaus been 3 shots in the lead on the final day, I don't think Phil would have picked up the Claret Jug regardless of his outstanding final round.

    +1

As TBE has pointed out Jacks record speaks for itself. Perhaps the depth of golf was not as deep in his day, but his scoring is testament to how good he was, with much inferior equipment of todays players.

Jack Nicklaus' main strength was mental fortitude, and the only other player who has shown that to any great degree  is Tiger in the current era (well he used to lol). Without that mental strength many players put themselves in a position to win, but fail at the last hurdle. Only the greats can do that for a prolonged period and Jack was one of them.

If Westwood choked then so did most of the field. Who scored the best rounds on the final day? Phil did the best score and duly won it. Poulter also played well to shoot a 67 and come joint third.

Westwood shot a 75 and Woods a 74. So Westwood choked but Woods didn't? You are only saying Westwood choked because he was in the lead by a few strokes going into the final round. Did Woods not choke?

75 on this course was not what you call choking, look at the average scores. Greg Norman and Faldo at the Masters, now you might say Norman choked then, but this is totally different.

Nicklaus and Wood you can't compare. Two different eras, but if anything you would side with Nicklaus. Think about the equipment back then, totally different. The courses were not as well maintained as they are now. Now players complain about everything. The rough is the wrong type, the wind too strong/wrong direction, greens too fast /slow. If the ball does not land perfectly accoring to their calculations, then the course must be unfair. Reminds me of the people on here complaing about VEM.

Nicklaus had strong competition, but Woods at his peak was way ahead of the rest of the field. So who had it tougher? The debate will go on forever.

102ft putt.....look how quickly Jack stands over the putt and hits.....and this is him at 70 yrs old.

anyone who thinks a 38 yr old Jack Nicklaus wouldn't really threaten today's top pro's is dreaming. he'd be adding to his 18 majors. this is just my opinion.

Woods has won 5 times this year. I'd say that's pretty good right there, sheesh.

Woods has broken many of Nicklaas's records already. The birth of Tigers carreer is defined by beating Jacks amatuer record (jack won 2 and Tiger won 3)

Hell woods has almost caught Sam Sneed for wins at the age of 37 & sneeds last win was at the age of 63? idk lol

Woods will beat Nicklaas's record for majors, absolutely will break that record. If anyone can do it, Tiger can.

I don't love the guy, but I have to admit that, that guy can win and will win again at least 5 more majors.

    ^^ This ^^

Tiger Woods is far from washed up.

It's always the same, when someone is at the very top of their game ........the only way is down.

True champions and I have always considered Tiger to be one, will always be able to reach into their game and climb back up to the top. Tiger is proving many people wrong which many people hate BUT I love it, even though I'm not his biggest fan I still give him the credit he's due.

An injury free Tiger is a threat never to be ignored in any tournament and will be for the next 8-10 years IMHO.
