    28 April,

PGA Golfer John Daly is 48

    Today's tribute:

Actress, singer and dancer Ann Margret is 73.

    Notables:

    • Author Harper Lee is 88 (wrote, To Kill a Mockingbird ... who didn't have to read that book?)
    • TV Show host Jay Leno is 64
    • TV Show host Drew Scott (not to be confused, of course, with Dred Scott)
    • Auto manufacturer Ferruccio Lamborghini (1916 - 1993) ... which brings up the question, who makes the better car ... Ferrari or Lamborghini?
    • Pianist Chuck Leavell is 62
    • Comic fantasy author Terry Pratchett is 66
    • Singer Wayne Osmond is 63

    Actors/Actresses:

    • Jessica Alba is 33
    • Penelope Cruz is 40
    • Nancy Lee Grahn is 56
    • Bridget Moynahan is 44
    • Carolyn Jones (1930 - 1983)
    • Mary Mcdonnell is 62
    • Marcia Strassman is 66

    Today's tribute:

I could have picked a few song and dance numbers of Ann Margret, but chose this one instead.  She had performed a dance number prior to talking with the show's host:

Does anyone know the host's name?  George ????.  I've never seen him before.

I am told that Nathan Birnbaum aka George Burns could handle a cigar like no other. That he made Mark Twain & U.S. Grant look butter-fingured.

Thank you Thomas.  I can now do a search on him.  I so love this thread ... it gives me the opportunity to check out the talents of singers and actors/actresses from prior eras.

Edit:  I wonder ... how many of you guys had a crush on Ann Margret growing up?  And, who's prettier (all things being equal) ... Ann Margret or Angelina Jolie?

    Today's tribute:

Duke Ellington had such a huge influence on American Jazz.  What's surprising is Duke never referred to the music as "Jazz", but called it "America's music" or "America's sound".

I've chosen two songs written for his lifetime band members, Johnny "Jeep" Hodges and Charles "Cootie" Williams.  These songs are not as well known as "A Train", but were written specifically for his friends and band members.  I truly hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Here's the song written for Hodges:

And now, the song first called "Concerto for Cootie":

In a private conversation, Sister Kat has many times expressed her fondness for Abigail (Smith) Adams & husband John and the many letters they shared over lifetimes. Kat told me she didn't have much prior to 1800, and so I shall put one here from December 23, 1782 as I promised I would. I could have done so privately, but since I have to type it anyway, I decided to share it here.

    My dearest friend,

...should I draw you the picture of my heart it would be what I hope you would still love though it contained nothing new. The early possession you obtained there, and the absolute power you have obtained over it, leaves not the smallest space unoccupied. I look back to the early days of our acquaintance and friendship as to the days of love and innocence, and, with an indescribable pleasure, I have seen near a score of years roll over our heads with affection heightened and improved by time, nor have the dreary years of absence in the smallest degree effaced from my mind the image of the dear untitled man to whom I gave my heart.

    Abigail Adams

Beautiful letter, Lily!  I so love the writings of the "unschooled Abigail".  I wish those educated with today's school system could write half as good as she did.

Ever figure out who "Portia" was (not the Merchant from Venice)?

SP, you have obviously spent far too much time in the 'wrong' 1/2 of the wonderful state of California.  Can go off people, you know  :)
