Here's the same shot using starter clubs and unlimited ball on Standard green speeds.

The longest flop shot available is 24 yards, too short for this 31 yd shot from 20-25 rough. So a couple of choices are a choked down full 50yd starter wedge or a full Starter PW pitch shot.

This works, a Full shot with a 50yd Starter Lob Wedge at 70% power full back spin

This works too, a Pitch shot with a starter PW at 97% power full back spin.

As you can see on the replay the Pitch shot lands short of the green then bounces once on the fringe before rolling out just past the hole.  A lot of things can happen landing on the fairway and fringe, many of them unpredictable and bad.

If possible, take those out of the equation and try and land on the green for a more predictable shot.  The choked down full shot would be the choice in this case as it does land on the green.

Edit:  A punch shot is also an option.  The starter Lob wedge punches at 42 yards so...

It works too.  A Punch shot with starter Lob Wedge at 80% power full back spin.

It looks almost identical to the full shot replay, landing on the green and rolling out.  A punch shot is something to consider in high cross wind situations as the punch is not affected by wind as much as a full shot is affected.

    andyson:

I hope my feedback helps this lessons thread soar because it is a great idea.

    Best to the OP!

    Andy

Good stuff Andy.  And your additional post with starter clubs and balls is awesome.  Wonderful contribution.  I agree that this is somewhat difficult to implement, given the "tome" on just this one shot :)

For starters (maybe) the comments section in the WGT Community/Golf Courses could be a start... something simple, like formalizing a comment with a title like Dubfore's (Michael's) thread title "Shot Lessons From WGT Members" and a simple division such as Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced.  People would begin to recognize it as a legitimate effort by WGT veterans to tutor beginners and advanced players in the various nuances, styles and approaches to a specific hole.

That makes sense Keith.  I've looked for the 'drop down' with courses etc in community help, will someone help my illiteracy with this. I coudn't find it. Maybe post a  link here?

Advice is only good if the reader takes it. There are lots of different ways to play this game and it's not the method that's important but the result.

I've read that you need a calculator to play this game, well I don't use one. I've read that you need shot-pal and putter-pal but I don't use them either.

The other day someone said that the most important thing was to know when to pitch and when to chip, well I never use either shot.

Oh, and it's a golden rule to dial in your irons. I've never bothered.

Opinions are like bums, we all have one but they are all a little bit different.

FWIW, Dub's not looking for opinions here, he's looking for experiences and knowledge. Not everybody is a prodigy.

@Dub-Andyson mentioned it in his last post-the punch. There are 2 ways to deal with that hole, IMO ( I realize this is not about that particular hole.)  Go over for a pitch return (it's a CTTH shot there) or go to the right and punch. The 64W with fbs is a stop and hop shot that is extremely easy to master. 31 yards is about a 2/3 swing. Punching that wedge is a great shot for 25-50 yards out (CG wedge.) The Satin 64W went 41 and under. Great tool.

Like Andyson, I went right to that hole so the greens are slower but this is what a pitch and a punch look like.

Opinions are based on experiences in this game. I have never claimed to be any good at this game so the prodigy jibe was uncalled for. I was just saying that results are what counts. I doubt if 10% of players would flop from where the op was but if it works for him then that's fine, others might use any one of half a dozen methods.

Hi Michael, you may already be familiar with it:  "WGT Community" is a choice on the WGT main page top menu,  (along with "get credits", "pro shop" "my profile" etc).  You will see "golf courses" under there.  Sorry I was not very clear... you were probably looking in the forum areas.  -Keith

Edit:  skip the top CTTH courses (Pebble and Harbour) they don't give you access to individual holes.

So this would not be a bad thing... right?  if I was having difficulty with this particular approach, the numerous player contributions in this thread would be a great way to find out what I'm doing wrong.

I generally do "ok" with this shot (I'm one of the 10% that flops it). Now I will seriously consider a full shot... the stopping power of my new upper level Clevelands shouldn't hurt either :)  but this is why the details above are so great, someone might find a close match to a veteran golfer's style, equipment and experience.

Anyway, I think a thread like this (flagged as a guide or something) would be a useful addition to the usual comments  like  "Rough approach" or "...played it left..chipped on and 3 putted the bloody thing..cheez!" and "h to be able to Putt." taken from Merion #5.

BTW nothing wrong with these other comments, they belong there too.  Sharing frustrations and triumphs and humor is all good. I love the understated "rough approach" comment.

As I have tried convey before, I cannot play  single holes, clicking on golf courses shown has no effect!
