Definitely the sound of surf rolling in at Oakmont, yet Google Earth tells me the nearest coastline is about 450 km away.

I think you may have been hearing the sound of "heavy wind" not surf.
You may be hearing the sound of traffic. The Pennsylvania turnpike goes through the course. You actually cross a foot bridge after the 1st hole that goes over the turnpike and again after you finish #8 you recross the bridge to tee off on #9. Hulton Rd (main highway) parallels #1 and #2........ If you slice OB on #1 you might hit a car.
