I like your game, having played the original Links for over a decade tho I can say that I am at times thoroughly disgusted with the play of your engine. Several times now I have had shots 1 foot off the green in the first cut set up for eagle. Nothing moves the ball. Doesn't matter what club or what type of shot the ball travels 0 yards. Completely ruins the round and any movement in average. I don't mind having trouble with an occasional bad shot lie but when you can't move a ball off 1 foot from the green in light rough first cut there is a problem with your VEM or whatever. Maybe in the tall weeds, but not a foot from the green in the first cut. Going from a 7ft chip for eagle to a quadruple bogey for no reason sucks balls.... The only answer is to NEVER roll off the green or miss a fairway... EVER. Totally unrealistic.

You haven't been playing WGT for a whole month yet.

You will just have to gain experience and become more familiar with how WGT plays.

In light rough (40%-50% lie or less) around the green I use pitch or punch mode and pretty much get on the green every time.

OP joined April 23rd, 2014,  he most certainly just needs to learn the game.

Hey Stevie, check out the chip and pitch tips over on the right under faq's ------->

    hpurey:

That helped me a bunch when I started here. I'd say it's a must use link for all new players if they want to speed their learning curve up a bit.

A few weeks into the game and his 1st post mentions VEM. Not the OP's fault but is an indication of how much absolute nonsense new players hear from people in chat.

Thank you for the mostly condescending comments provided so far. Seems none of you really bothered to read my post, but that's ok.

As for 'chat', never been there. lol

As for "chip & putt' tips, gee never thought of that, I must be an idiot... (not). I've been thru all the videos here and many more elsewhere. You're missing my point entirely.

While I am new to wgt I am NOT new to golf or golf computer games. Quite the opposite.

The point I was making was that in real life, if I am standing on 1rst cut two feet off the green and I swing away with ANY club, and ANY type of shot, the ball will travel more than ZERO feet. Period.

I went to practice mode, put the ball behind the green (one example was Kawaih, one of the par 5's on the back 9 I think) a foot or two off the green. I tried a dozen different shots. Flops, chips, punches, full, irons, wedges, you name it. They all traveled zero - 1 feet. This is a problem with the underlying engine mis-identifying the resistance of the surface where the ball lays (the VEM). I might expect this in the tall weeds, but not in the first cut two feet past the green. And not 10 shots in a row with every conceivable combination of club and shot profile.

Of course, with EVERY computer simulation game, one must play it awhile and learn it's idiosyncrasies. That wasn't my point. My point was that in ALL the many computer golf games I've played over the last two decades I had never run across something so blatantly flawed. I would like to see the problem addressed, that is all.

For now I play a bit more conservatively, especially on holes where I have had problems, taking care not to miss the green at all. But as I said, that wasn't really my point.

BTW, do a little research here and you will see that I am not the only one who has pointed similar problems out.

Thanks again for the warm condescending welcome... have a nice day. :)

hey much of the criticism of wgt is legit! this however is a clear example of getting to know the nuances of the game. . . punch the 40-50%'s most of the time, it'll get you there

It's not flawed, your trying to play it like real life golf or some other game you play and not using enough power...when you do that it whiffs the ball...or using the wrong shot...

if you try to chip an 8i 8yrds on a flat green it whiffs, use the right clubs setup for this game...

if your in the fringe which is where you would be 1ft off the green and chip it will NOT just sit there. If you hit a flop shot in deep rough it will whiff, a 3wd from deep rough will whiff...

you just don't know how to play yet, simple as that...

    Stevie,

            1) I realize that you haven't played many games here but have you taken the time to "map" your wedges? If you do not understand the term explanations can be  found through SEARCH.  If you know how far the ball should travel with a given wedge, with various applications of spin, in the Full, Punch, Pitch, Chip, & Flop modes - it makes this game one heck of a lot less frustrating.

            2) Unless you are in mulch or deep rough, your ball will move - UNLESS, you are using the wrong club. Trying to use a 3 iron, at "Full" power, out of 60-70% weeds won't work!!

             3) The primary idiosyncrasy that must be learned in this game (aside from a thorough understanding of the capabilities of your clubs) is how long or short each hole (on each course) plays.  For example, my notes say that hole #1 at St. Andrews plays 1 yard short (I must add 1 yard more to my shot to make the ball get close to the hole) while an approach shot on Hole #3 plays 3 yards long (be advised that these figures are for the ball/club combinations that I use - your numbers may be different).

              4) As the old Country & Western song says " It don't matter at all, where you've played before....(WGT's) a brand new game "  (LOL)

    Play on!!

Just curious if you're getting where the second click doesn't take effect and the bar keeps moving through.  Had that happen on numerous occasions to me and I switched to firefox and haven't had a problem since.  I clean cache from flash from adobe each day or when the meter gets twitchy.  Otherwise I can chip from 40/50 from 8 yards, but I tend to use a punch or full shot in the 25-35% range with full backspin to get the desired effect for me.
