    Bethpage Bk #13

Something I noticed about the green area on this par 5:

I've come about 5 inches short of the green and hit the apron (I think it's called) or the curved fringe just on the front side of the green (and it's a little wavy looking) and the option to chip was made available. I think the indicator said 'fairway'.

Yet, at another time when I was 2 feet deep into it the option to putt came up. It might have indicated 'fringe'. This was weird because I didn't want to putt thru all that grass, and I would have thought it would have suggested the other way around.

    To review:

Missed the green by 5 inches = said Chip

Missed it by 2 feet = said Putt

    ps

I know I could have chosen whatever I desired but it seemed backwards to me.

Plus, I'm almost sure the indicator (when you mouse over the ball spin dot) said 'fairway' when I was just off the green in what is commonly called 'the fringe'.

    Just saying. Mapping issue?

Front right corner, there might be FW between fringe and green => DO NOT PUTT!

Long ago, we had threads about the Bethpage (or BPB) "Bermuda triangle" - I posted some pics then.

You can always choose the putt option but often it is a bad decision.

I think the green on the front 9 at Oakmont, it's a par four can't recall the number of the hole, has about 25 yards of fringe behind the green.  I've watched several people attempt to putt through that and it is virtually impossible.

The key to me is if you aren't sure, don't putt it.   BPB has a number of places like that as do a few other holes and courses.  As Alosso mentioned there are a few threads around about this from the past, check them out.

Yep! Uphill friiiiinge - no-putt zone!

    And #10 me thinks...

When I got me the right wedges (lvl38 that is) I put a full stop to putting from fringe.

Thanks, because I did a forum search about 13 before I chose to post the observation and I saw the  "Bermuda triangle" thread but I skimmed it too fast and failed to notice the connection.

I guess it's good to bump this topic out again, I find myself often hitting this spot as it is a great approach for me; it being near the hole, and sort of using the apron to slow the ball down to reach the pin.

Déjà vu, we meet again...today the Volvik L51 pulled thru.

p.s. and yes, I failed when I tried to also putt thru Oakmont's #3 back area recently. Never again.

I do almost always putt from the fringe apart from Chambers Bay, RSG(as fringe isnt clearly visible for these 2 courses) and BB#13.. Do remember making a putt from fairway from short of green on Oak #3,however need to take into factor the strength of fairway into the putt

Don't trust the caddy - he's on WGT's payroll and smoking confiscated stuff from the pro-shop.      LOL

Yea, ditto, and dozens of my holed approach shots were putts from normal fringe which count in your stats as H.A.S. but this area on BPB 13 has fringe/fairway/green or something unless it's been changed and I crashed and burned in the past.

My Oak #3 mistake was when I was in DEEP and I thought i'd power thru but it went less than half as far as I thought it would even when I added a large calculation into the shot.

Here's a replay w/ a little fringe and some wind factored in:

35 foot birdie from fringe RG 15
