Distances to the pin

  Just wondering if you guys have ever thought about correcting the distances on holes, a bunch of them that are off but one of the most obvious examples would be Oak 17 the back pin, the yardage to the hole reads 299 on the yardage marker and scorecard but if i hit a 304 yard drive i am still 15 yards short of the hole.

  After you hit the drive on that hole if you watch the replay the hole distance is then correct at 952 feet 317 yards, not hard to put 317 on the scorecard.

  I believe the distances are correct. They are usually off because the holes are not straight, so you have to adjust your yardage, aim based on your position.

  FWIW, my notes say that Oak 17 plays 1 to 2 yards longer than stated  - i.e must add power on that hole, but I'm sure that you already know this : ).

  @Icon: At a dogleg, the true distance to the pin is shorter than the scorecard distance which follows the deviating path of the fairway. Thus your post is not an explanation of a hole appearing longer than marked :)

  @roaddog: On the courses before OLY, the scorecard length of Par4s and Par5s is given to one of the pins - probably to the front pin at OAK #17. Dogleg or not, the back pin will be considerably further away. Judging from the back green view of the hole, 20 yds appears like the approximate distance between the pins.

  Before the first shot from the tee, you will see the true distance to the current pin when hovering over the blue dot on the mini-map.

  I find a lot of distances are wrong on real courses too. Just a case of making notes on each hole.

  Ok well St Andrews 9 is pretty darn straight and one of those pins is off as well.

   

  And like Alosso said above Oak 17 is a dogleg, if you followed the deviated path the hole would be even longer than the 317 stated above, and definitely way longer than the 299 says on the scorecard. Not that it is a big deal just seems like a simple fix to have someone go through the holes and fix it.

  Though I objected to Icon concerning his argument, I'd think that the scorecard is correct for WGTland. Apparently OAK#17 is considered straight, because the front pin distance equals the scorecard length, 244 from red (single hole play). From there, it's about 20 paces to the back pin, corresponding to your observation.

  Generally, there may be a difference between scorecard and pin distance. It's the rule for OLY, MER and PIN which have a different measuring philosophy.

  You should hover over the blue dot next time you're there or use the marker in reverse green view to sort it out.

  I have done those things, and from legend tees it is 317 yards to the back pin but the yardage in the top right hand corner reads 299

  Then, 299 is the scorecard length, measured to the front pin, and 317 the distance to the back pin.
