And I screwed up my post

Unless your on the fringe anyway...as far as your ball getting sucked into the rough..well that's possible since there trying to emulate 6 " rough prevalent on USGA championship set ups. However the friction model for the (fringe) I said greens..lol.).. really needs some help. It should react half way between the FW and the green..ain't no where near close.

LOL........ I'm done WGT with spending anymore money...I upgraded more clubs/balls etc and no problem.... until around the green...4 quad bogeys because you can't really play a "pitch and run" because it just hangs up on the first contact after hitting the ball..... 4 quads and still a +10 on BPB....... all of those because of the goofy, unpredictable play in the rough around the green.... I'm not saying it should be easy, but please.... you can't run the ball at all and on the 1rst hit it just hits the fringy and stops???? Either blast it way past the flag or take several shots to get it out when your only 10 to 20' from the pin? I'm done......I'll keep playing, but will do so with stock equipment.... I'd spend the money but not for this around-the-green-bs.... sorry... great game otherwise... but not spending any more $$$ here on upgraded equipment or balls....

Sounds like you are trying to use the chip shot type.  A big no no!  Do not use chip if you are more then a 1-2ft off green, it will be a chunk ever ytime.  I dot remember the last time I used chip, pitch or flop.  My shot selections are either full or punch!

note if you get 4 quads and its from the same shot selections that a suggestion would be to try something else.

    Cheers

Modelling short game is always going to be the hardest part of a simulation due to the vast variety of shot the pros employ to deal with the different situations they are faced with (think Phil Mickelson's phase of using 3W to 'putt' when ball was resting against edge of first cut rough).  However, I think WGT have actually done a reasonable job by providing full, punch, pitch, chip and flop options.

Would also say however then when in rough about 10-20ft from pin with little green to work with it is actually realistic for it to be hard to hit a firm enough shot to get through the grass to the ball (i.e. pitch, not chip) and still stop the ball near the pin.

Also, regarding shots dying on fringe, check the slope.  I find many fringes are an upslope and so if ball pitches on them it is realistic for it to stop on these.  You get the opposite on shots where fringe is a downslope.

As in reality, key to improving short game is practice, practice, practice to get used to how each shot behaves.  As Gary Player once replied to a journo asking about how lucky he seemed to be with his short game, 'The more I practice, the luckier I get.'

That is sound advice for a beginner or low experience player. Both shots with practice will enable any player to get up and down most occasions. Far easier to become proficient with distance control with both of these shots than with pitch or chip. I do however think that being a good flop player also has its merits :^)

If you have to land the ball in the fringe..try hitting it alittle shorter and apply top spin..it will roll right threw it.

It took me about 50 shots in play before I finally got decent at my short game.  I cursed the game and thought the same thing you did until I started to get the hang of it. Now, I can stop it within 5 feet probably 80% of the time with the stock LW.  In fact, my current game is suffering because I upgraded to a new club which I have to learn all over.

I always use pitch.  I dont factor the lie that much on the shot except that bad lie = a little more roll.  Also, the ball will not come off the club square all of the time....just like real life.  I always hit the ball way higher on the green than you would think makes sense.  For example, if the grain is moving the ball to the left, aim to the right but move a full square to the right of where you would normally aim.  The only time I dont do that is if its straight all the way in.

I also think you have to hit it more than half regardless of how close you are.  Otherwise, the ball will go like 2 feet and stop.  So, even if you're 8-10 yards away, hit it 60-70%.  If the shot is more than 18 yds, then you can go to the default SW.  Above all, remember that the shot is basically an up and down shot so the initial bounce has to be on the green or your SOL.

I think if you use these techniques, your quality around the green will go up tremendously.  It helped me get my average down to about 67 or 68 on Pro and I was using the stock SW and LW.

There is a time and place for almost every shot on here. What Bogey wrote is to the point but I like to think that a persons short game is what makes or breaks a player on WGT. When someone starts to scream about how this game sucks the first place I go is to their stats page and look at 4 things

    1. 1 putt Average
    2. 2 Putt Average
    3. Sand %
    4. Scrambling %

By looking at these stats it will usually tell you about everything you need to know about a player. While it depends on the short game shot  I almost always use full to 3/4 backspin on the shot to control the amount of roll. So when do you use each shot? I do not believe there are any set standards but here a few I live by.

    1. Chip: Fringe or under 2 feet from the hole. Average roll with a chip shot with full backspin 2-3 feet on a normal to slightly up hill lie, factor in 1.5 to 2 on a 1-2 down hill lie. Anymore than that look at flop shot.

    2. Pitch: More that 2 feet away from green, ball is not below where I can see the green. Average roll with a pitch shot with full backspin 4-6 feet on a normal lie, 4-5 on uphill lie, add +3 on a downhill lie.

    3. Flop: One of the least valued shots on here because most do not know how to use this shot. 95% of the time you should never hit the ding line but stop it at the first marker to the left of the ding line. Doing this will force the ball to go straight where you aim rather than come off the club head to the right. Great shot 15 to 24 feet from the hole. Great shot if you have a large down hill or up hill lie or where you think the shot does not favor a chip or pitch shot. Average roll 3-4, will stop dead with callaway s ball.

    4. Full Wedge: I am not sure how many utilize the 50 yd wedge around the green on short shots but I tend to use it a lot and with great accuracy on shots anywhere from 20+ when I want the ball to stop almost dead or need a good backspin to the whole (works best with callaway S). With other balls it will roll 2-3 yds depending on the lie.

While I know there are more rules these are just a few of the basics ones I use. All to often I have seen some forum troll write that you cannot use these with any accuracy and to that I say BS! I have 55 holed approach shots and maybe 10 were lucky shots from long distances. I think it was Avatar Lee that once wrote the great players on this game do not always shot birdies but they rarely have bogies. Some of the best players on here have scrambling and sand %'s in the high 70's to low 80's. While I have not achieved that, being in the mid 60's has allowed me to move to legend and shot under par right away.  IMO!

Great post Sarge, thank you for providing advice on the shots I have the most trouble with. The pitch/chip shots have been my weakness from the get go, to the point of giving up on them and only using the flop from in close. My sand saves & scrambling have improved from  mid 30%  to 51% & 58% respectively. Putting however is a different story from outside 7-8 feet LOL .... sometimes it's there, most times it's nowhere to be found. It'll come sooner or later, maybe then I can actually "enjoy" Bethpage & Oakmont instead of second guessing every shot.

    p.s  .10 more & I'm finally "there"    :)))

1 other shot can provide u far better stats around the green..... the punch

...very usefull from the thick stuff 2. My 50yds wedge has an 41yds punch shot and anywhere between 15-41 yds from the pin, depending on lie and wind, it's very accurate.....I would say, try it yourself

    Cheers, GC
