The meter firing on its own is not a WGT bug! It is your wornout mouse or if you use a wireless mouse it is the workout almost dead batteries. Get a good mouse or replace the batteries in your wireless mouse and problem solved. A wornout mouse can cause all kinds of erratic meter problems. From the meter not firing at all to what many of us call false clicks where the worn contacts lose contact with each other just long enough for the game to read it as a click. And as often as we click and hold the mouse button here it doesn't take long for even the most sturdily built mouse to wear out.
As far as dings go ,that only means you clicked the mouse at the mid point of the meter. Only if your speed and direction are right will the putt fall. That is only common sense. A poorly aimed putt hit too easily or too hard will not fall even if you do hit the ding. This isn't some arcade type game where all you have to do is hit the ding to get a perfectly struck shot that goes into the hole. If it was like that winning the Virtual U.S.Open would mean nothing!
