Bertha 96 vs R1 98

  I have loved my Bertha 96 since the first swing...and rightfully so. For the past week I have rented the R1 98 so as to determine which is the better...just for Yankee Jim ;-}

  Both are spectacular. Very long, very accurate, easy to hit. Which is the better ? Frankly, it would depend upon where you are playing, and what type of ball you prefer. Aside from that they are equally wonderful ! ~ SP ~

  The 100% reason I like it and stay with it myself is because it's the only 8 degree driver in the shop. Back spin takes it to a 9 degree but you can't turn that 9 degree into an 8 and a low flying driver gets moved around by the wind less and rolls like a bear on the links courses.

  Never did care about being the longest off the tee, it's all about finding Position A.  :-)

  LOL - and hard to argue :)

  I am still hoping for that variable spin driver (maybe loft too, lol). Be fun I think.

  Lily, that's a fair assessment.  I know you prefer the BB, or at least have expressed a preference in the past, but you just provided an unbiased look at the two drivers.

  Like YJ (and I'm sure several others) I prefer the 8 degree R1, being more of a line drive hitter...nothing wrong with the high level bombs, of course...it really just comes down to personal preference.

  For me, the jury's still out on the L100 Nike, and probably always will be.

  Understood. They both punch really well, really accurate, and both respond well with different spin applications and that is when they have a parting of the ways. Much to experiment with ;-}

  Ha -- I just wish I could rent it -- I hit L 99 about a week ago so L 100 is miles away...I'm talkin' miles & miles...unless I break down and swill one of those meth drinks...or is it the candy bar?

  Of all the driver/ball combos I play against, the one that consistently is the longest by up to a club is the Coventry with the level 90 Nike that has 5.5 for distance. Monster combo.

  Have to admit I am a whack it as far as I can merchant, LOL.  OK even I have have to sometimes force myself to temper, but usually just pelt it.  Fully realise that's off ideal and catch the odd upslope trying for gold.  Never have an issue with doglegs though (L90 Nike with my R1).

  They are all so flippin good really, and I am not refined enough to bother swapping clubs per course.

  I think that variable spin / loft would be the only thing that would persuade me too look past my trusty R1, and I see that as more a pure fun thing.  That would make the parting with my best friend v easy, lol.

  Coventry is the L100 Nike.  I'm sure he meant Covert.
