Hey gang, I wasn't expecting it so soon, but just tiered up to legend. In fact I think it was ridiculously quick. I beat a few of legends in match play, killed some courses and zoom. I'm here after just 300 something rounds - playing just 4 months.

Ive been forking money on equipment since I got here. I enjoy the game a lot and will be practicing like crazy to get adjusted to new tees and championship greens. But I'm wondering if I need to upgrade my equipment. I don't want to fork out more money if I don't need to.

    I have the following clubs:

    Driver XHot L69

    R11 3 Wood L30 (such a great, forgiving driver)

    Wedges: 54W L60 (105 yds) 56W L50 (90 yards) 64W L52 (60 yards)

    Irons: G25 L59

    Putter Odyssey L70

My ball of choice (economical reasons): Tour SD

Talking out loud here: I'm really keen on getting new iron set Nike Forged when I level up to 85 but then I'm left in a sticky situation with an iron that has nearly same distance as my 3 Wood and a big distance gap between my L60 wedge and lowest iron in the Nike set.

I'm really interested knowing if anyone else tiered up Legend level 80s with similar equipment and what was, if any, their most important acquisition regarding the new tees and greens.

Thank you for reading this post. I hope to get some good advice fromyou guys in the know.

    Cheers Mattk aka sacredcow40

Well done there Matt-cow ! Quickly, let me say, keep your putter and ride it to L-96 (promise). Try to keep your meter at 3.5 and get a driver at 282 - High flight. If you need a 3-wood - Bertha is great. The L85 irons are dandy! You need all new wedges and the New Cleves are wonderful. Balls ? Let your pocket book guide you.....lastly (if you care about your average) when you turned to Legend, your average started over and any newer ranked rounds will greatly lower/raise your average. Have fun ~ Lily ~

    Hey Lily,

Thank you for that great advice. I'll probably upgrade in increments because it's a lot of doe.. By the way, what's a pocket book? Or are you referring to 'finances'. I like those Cleveland wedges you mentioned. And no, I won't be doing away with this lovely Odyssey putter. I'm aware of how my average starts again from here. I'll probably do a lot of practice before I play a scored stroke game.

So this is what I like so far to upgrade to (all with 3.5 meter speed):

    Driver:  X Hot L83

    3 Wood: X Hot 3W L73

    Wedges: 3xCleveland 588 (yardages 100, 80, 60)

    Irons: Nike VR Forged L85

Obviously, people might have different opinions about what to do. So I'll wait out till this thread is done and dusted before I leap into anything.

    Cheers

It's not a bad level to hit the tips and begin the learning process - been there.  FWIW forget all about average score.  It's 500 RRs until saturation, and as you know once that happens your average drops as it's then only an average of your best ever 500 counting RRs as Legend.

I have not used that X Hot 3W, but only med / high trajectory suggests is sticking ability is not as good as some.  I used the R11 but a flighty thing and easier to hit stuff now around.  Most carry the L89 BB as soon as they can to.

Many like those L85 Nikes and use them to great effect in Legend tier comps - hard to say don't strongly consider them.

Cleve wedges - well I would not look past them in all honesty.

    Drivers....Hmmm...I like the look of that L88 one (bit extra spin to help on doglegs maybe although with your ball not sure how much difference);

Putter - you have a great one already as discussed.

Your credits but thinking budget route you have plenty get accustomed to the tips, and get some decent scores now.  I would be holding off until a few more levels at least.  Probably I would go with the L85 Nikes (I used the Blades but flighty I warn you), really map those, learn my wedges (essential) and round off at L88 / L89.  That's my opinion as the pro shop stands this minute:)

I never got too wrapped up in that same speed for everything thing, but that's personal.

    Hey Jim,

I appreciate the info. But I didn't get this part:
It's 500 RRs until saturation, and as you know once that happens your average drops as it's then only an average of your best ever 500 counting RRs as Legend. '

Ive been milling over it and I just am clueless what you mean there.

I'll add the L88 driver to consider although the L83 seems to have same assets and same price. Yeh I reckon my first buy will be the 85 Nikes. I'm happyish with my wedges for a little while longer. I want this to be my final acquisition stage, like you mentioned finishing off about L88/89. The only other club I might purchase after that could be new putter in L90's. But we'll see what happens.

    Cheers Jim.

LOL yes on the beer, but not beer O'clock yet:)

The L88 driver has .5 more spin.  Why I said extra spin may come in handy holding the ball up on the Fway on those tight doglegs.  How much of a difference and how much with your ball not real sure, BUT given the choice that one would have my eye.

See the penultimate FAQ - some others may be of use to - maybe.
Basically though after 500 RRs played within Legend tier your average is not a true average of submitted scores from rounds that count (e.g. BoP3 / 5s do not count).  This is because once you get that 500 under your belt your "WGT average" can only drop because it then becomes an average of only your best ever 500 counting RRs shot within Legend tier - Important to understand:)
Several ways to skin the cat, and so very much JMO:)

See the FAQ (same website) on XPs needed for each level.  I think you may be v surprised.  Also I would add many TLs (some Ls as well) prefer the R11 irons, but that's a good way off for you.  A look at Legend  only RGs will show you what they are able to compete with at that elite (for L tier) level.

My beer oclock was last night and it has been groggy o'clock ever since

You are correct. I misread the data on the page. That spin could be very handy. Worth considering.

This is a bit clearer. So basically once someone reaches 500 RR, the average is not derived from their current tier 'best of' RRs but from their overall best 500 rounds. So at round 499 for instance your average is derived from the best RRs from your current tier then once you get to 500 it switches to your average from your best 500 RRs. Do I have it?

What are RG's Jim? Is this like weekly tourneys at Legend level?
Cheers jim. This is all very handy info.

Yup - don't be too daunted by TL players with an average in the 50's

If you check out ranked rounds - many of them have thousands of ranked rounds.

Their actual average as a TL might really be about 65 -- but the average of their BEST 500 rounds played as a TL could be 58.  (some in the very low 50's)

After getting 500 ranked rounds under their belt as a TL (and an average of  say - 65) - they have steadily scored both high and low. The high rounds do nothing (as the average is only based on the best 500) - the low rounds slowly chip away at the average.

No Offence to any TL's - not meant to suggest this is typical -- just an example.

Of course there are a few killers out there that actually average in the mid 50's. They are the ones regularly on top of the Virtual Tour leader boards. But not too many.
