That philosophy does not make sense. If it is a one ball rule then why give the beginner ball and not another purchased ball. This sounds like a money (credit) grab to me.

    Hi Djuser,

It was decided that instead of a player forfeiting that round for not being able to continue with the same ball type (which honestly, I think would upset players a lot more) they would be given the starter ball. This also prevents an issue I am going to call Ball Stacking, where a player may know that for a tournament they play a certain ball type better on the front 9  than the back 9 but have a different ball that works better on the back 9 than the front, maybe due to better spin or slower meter and they dont need as much spin.

Anyways, theoretically you could play down a sleeve of balls till you had enough of one ball type for those front 9 holes and when you ran out, you would be given an option of another ball. Now you are able to play two different balls and have an advantage over another player. Doesn't seem like much, but to avoid all that, WGT went with the starter ball, something that everyone has and it keeps it a little more fair.

Not everyone is going to agree with it but it makes sense to me.

    All the Best,
    WGTShamWow

Now that you've explained your Ball Stacking theory for tournaments, explain WGT's reason for forcing your one ball rule on us in practice, single player games not in tournament play, social low level multiplayer games between friends who don't care and country club tournaments where the tournament director would allow competitors to use whatever ball is in inventory as the game is conducted in real life?

    That doesn't fit my question.

It says repeatedly, "the player must play a ball", not referring to brand or type.

    True and well-known.

This is all new - is it your private thoughts on it?

Can't think of it as an official reason - never heard of it before and think that it's all far-fetched, cf. the long explanation neccessary.

I'm gonna stick with Chad's classic explanation: WGT don't want to select the next ball for the users, thus the Starter. It perfectly implies my thinking, "No options for the users".

Re Ball Stacking, if players could switch balls between rounds they would constantly be doing so and it would slow down the game.

Nice to see, BTW, that the options to purchase additional balls of the same type during a round have been greatly expanded, with:

    1) a reminder when you get down to 1 ball,

    2) a reminder when 1 hit is left on the ball,

    3) an explicit choice to continue with starter balls or buy fresh balls when you run out of hits, and

    4) if you do choose to continue with starter balls, an additional chance later in the game to buy more of the original balls you ran out of!

All of this is in the spirit of the WGT one-ball variation and is a total win-win.

It's not a win with respect to realism.

Just a money maker for WGT.  That's all it is.  IMHO.

Please explain. Carrying more balls costs no more in the long run and all the time you are using the rocks you're not taking wear off a paid for ball.

[I didn't say it applied to the average amateur golfer, I was merely stating that as wgt base this game on a PGA (virtual) Tour that is why ball selection (replacement) is managed in the way it is............. and by doing so they generate income. If you hit a ball into the Swilken Burn (first hole at St Andrews) for real, you just fish it out and carry on with same ball (under penalty of course) but in this game you loose the ball............ WHY................generates income. Also if a PGA tour Pro or any other tour pro hits a ball in the water they don't fish it out they simply take the penalty with a new ball (but one of that same brand and number!.............So WGT just follow suit, and it does suit them as it generates income................Thats my Opinion and thats my PROOF

You don't have to agree its just my opinion, but the facts are true!!
