I would like to know how the handicap average works. I had just reached tour pro status when my younger brother played a ranking round and blew my score to 85. After sucessive matches I cant seem to lower my 76.09 handicap even when I just scored -13 playing alone. Can anyone explain how it works? Does the scorecard mean anything? Thank you in advance.

    Best regards,

    Leo

Nice that you shot a -13 unfortunately that was on the Par 5 course which does not figure into your average (neither do Par 3 courses).  Otherwise, your scoring history looks like mid 70s is what your average should be.

When you move up tiers your average resets. That's why the one bad score put your average up so much.  Just keep on playing St. Andrews and Kiawah and your average will come down.  (But average in this game really does mean absolutely nothing.)

    1) Average is reset when tiering up.

    2) For average, a certain number of your best scores is used - 25 for Tour Pro. Once you reach that number, your average can only decrease until you tier up.

    3) For average, gross scores are used, 9 hole scores are doubled. You 35 and 36 at STA will have had an influence as a 70 and 72.

    4) Par3 and Par5 scores do not count in. That's why the 77 did not change nothing.

    5) Next tier - Master - at 67 average.

You know Dave, that is the most preposterous comment I've read in a very long time. In general terms, as it relates to wgt, it means everything...from cradle to grave.. except to those who have "hit the wall" with it and no longer can improve it, or to those who use it as a ruse and sandbag, at which point it becomes even more important.  ~ SP ~

You are absolutely right. What could I have been thinking ?!   Just wondering which category I am in as I have never once been concerned with what my "average" was.

I agree with DD.  It means something only if a player actually plays stroke rounds from the tips.

How about all these lower tier players, pro, tour pro, master, tour master etc. that are trying to advance to the next tier? They have to have a certain average to advance, so it means something to them! And, they are not playing from the tips.

How can you possibly agree with DD. He said it means "nothing", you say it means "something". That looks to me like disagreement.

I see how you might be confused.  Let me take another whack at it although you might not agree with my opinion and you most certainly won't like it.

This is my opinion but anyway... If a player plays stroke play and does so mostly (like 9.5 out of 10 times) from the tips, then (again) imo, their avg counts.  If a players plays nothing but CTTH, their avg is bogus.  If a player plays 4 out of 10 rounds (or more) from the red tees, their avg is bogus.

So... sometimes an avg means something.  Sometimes it doesn't.
