It seems to me that the majority of the time when I try to load either the game client window or an actual game the loading will freeze because I have lost internet access, it also disconnects in the middle of a game, I am on a laptop on a wireless connection. The connection just dies, I the network is in full range and the signal strength is high, yet it won't let me connect, saying its not available when it CLEARLY IS!!! and so I have to wait a couple of minutes before the laptop registers the network again. This has cost me many games and credits where I have had forced disconnections , I am also aware this is incredibly frustrating for those who I play with. Another thing is that this ONLY seems to occur while trying to load WGT and playing it.

Any ideas/help/suggestions would be VERY VERY much appreciated.

Have you checked your internet connection to other sites when this happens to verify if your connection is actually lost or not? Also, the taskbar icon near the clock (assuming you are using windows) also will show your current network connectivity status. If you are losing your internet connection, that is on  your end and must be addressed first. If you have a live internet connection and are having these disconnects, there are other things to try.

Post back when you know which it is, please, and there will be plenty of posts to help you out in addressing it.

You did mention the laptop has to go through the process of identifying the network before you can connect, so it sounds to me like it is a physical connection issues between your laptop and the wireless router, just want to be sure.

Thanks for the reply, Yep I completely lose connectivity on all websites and yes it does have to identify the network again before it connects

definitely an issue that needs ot be resolved with the connectivity on your end then, united. How often is this happening to you, that it loses its connection and has to start over?

I posted to your wall also, lots and lots of things that could affect this, and I'd be happy to chat with you and help you try to troubleshoot when we both have time.

First and foremost is to make sure you are in range of the wireless router, plain sight view, and as close as possible to start, and see if that helps. If you can get the wireless router up high, so the antenna(s) are in plain sight, that may help to give you a stronger signal, and more constant connection.

If possible, you might also consider temporarily connecting with an ethernet cable from the router into the laptop, and see if a hard wired connection stays active without the reconnection - my guess is that it will.

    edit:

united, also, are you comfortable accessing the setup menu on the wireless device, if we need to check it's settings and configuration, or did someone else configure this for you? Not trying to belittle, just trying to see what level of experience you have before we attack this!

     - what type of connection are you on?

    -  what type of wireless device are you using (make/model)?

Thanks again VanHalen for your interest. I configured it myself and it had been working fine until about 2 months ago and it has steadily become worse.

I'm using a Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter on a Wireless INetwork Connection and the device is a D-Link 802.11g/2.4GHz. The signal strength is 92% so I don't think thats a problem, I've tried windows troubleshooter too but no surprises that didn't do anything.

I also don't currently have skype but am aware of it and havent got around to getting it. I might get I now though.

    U4L,

The first thing I would suggest is to check your channel number that the wireless is using. If it worked better before and is now losing connection, it is very possible that someone close to you is using the same channel and causing interference. if you have added a new wireless phone at home it can react in a similar fashion also, depending on its frequency.

If you can get into the wireless config menu, try resetting the channel to 11 (preferred) or 1 and see if it helps. If you google 'wireshark' there is a nifty little program you can download that will show you all the wireless broadcasts within range, and tell you which channel they are using, making your choice an easier one to make.

    ty VanHalen

I changed the channel to 1 and no problems so far :) (although it may be leading me towards a false sense of security) will post back if problem continues.  Once again tyvm.

Hey VHL, could a setting in a Anti-virus program cause the network to not accept the broadband signal?

I'm using a wired modem and a while back my Anti-virus program wouldn't allow my network to go through, and was having similar problems with the web. For some reason the boxes got checked (see below). I called my ISP, and they said my connection was fine.

The two "Block access when" boxes got checked somehow. I haven't had a problem with my network since unchecking them. It took me a full day to figure-out what was causing this network problem.

Just thought I'd throw this out there, and see if it could maybe help.

Richard, it certainly could - although generally it is an all-or-none scenario, and not intermittent. Most filtering and protection is done within the browsing session, and does not typically prevents browsing all together (ie: the examples you included would block on a site by site basis, but would not restrict overall internet access). I'm certainly not saying this isn't possible, but I just don't think it is the case here, as U4L has described it working fine before, and has not alluded to any software or hardware changes that might have be causing this.
