From time to time we see the newer or mid-journey players ask for club advice and most of the direction is sincere and useful. Many of the advice seekers word their post in a way that seems to indicate a desire to buy the ideal clubs for life and halt the spending as much as possible. I approach it from a different angle. That being, as long as I play and stay here. I am more interested in my next purchase. It keeps my mind and eyes open for the pleasure of trying something different as I see it as part of the pleasure of the game. It (this attitude) seems to provide a unique freedom.  ~ SP ~

Simple guide: All clubs must fly high. The meter speed 3.5 , slower for putter. Buy every good wedge they make, and keep them. Use good balls.

^^This all day. The only thing left would be to pick 1 solid setup, ball included, and stay with it. The best thing you can do for yourself is to learn whatever you wind up with. You're not buying shots or strokes, you're just buying better equipment to make those shots and save those strokes and that all goes by the wayside if you don't take the time. A few outings isn't going to do it, either.  :-)

p.s., A good exercise to learn your clubs is to play the weekly unlimited tournaments. You can take all sorts of practice shots, putt a bunch and learn under your real tier conditions. Restart whenever you want. The repetition will let you see the range of accuracy and forgiveness in your new stuff. You'll also be learning the course.  GL

Then you take a look at the stats

I'd leave that card home if I were you. For someone here less than a year with the much better equipment available, they're nothing to write home about.

Espousing 3 different meter speeds is hardly good advice. Even club gaps and consistent meter speeds go farther than anything to improve a game. I thought Phred's (and alosso's) advice was concise, easy to understand and very appropriate to what the OP is looking to do.

The R1 at 48 is so good for the level that I consider it a borderline cheat.

    Hey Solarflares,

I am offering you a virtual olive branch.  I don't want to get in a verbal jousting contest with you.  we both approach the game from different places.  I have been more budget minded, in part due to as I have mentioned before, I am a dinosaur and freely admit that time and gravity have taken their toll.

I choose to spend most of my entertainment income in other ways than on this site buying the top level equipment.   The best I've ever done was a 3rd place in the Valhalla tournament for my tier last year.  I think I was still a Master at that time

While throwing out figures I didn't take into account the 10% discounts available when purchasing after renting.  Also you were recommending a 3W purchase (the Max lvl46) and I therefore was following the logic in purchasing the same clubs you suggested.

The only problem I have with you is you think that you are always right, and anyone that disagrees with you is always wrong.  You refer to the G25 driver and woods as junk.  That may very well be YOUR experience with them.  I had good luck with those clubs, considering the way i was playing the game then.

As I've said before, I wanted to work within a budget, and get clubs that woruld work for me.  The Pings did that for me.  You should have noticed that i kept suggesting that the OP RENT BEFORE HE BOUGHT ANYTHING.

Will the setup you recommend work better than what i used?  I'm sure it will for lots of people.  I simply pointed out other options.

I do find it odd that you go into attack mode whenever anyone has a difference of opinion with you.  Reasonable people can disagree about things.  If you read it back, I never said I was right in my approach and you were wrong.  And i never made derogatory comments about your ability to play this game or your capacity to advise.  My comments were not critical of your advise.  Just a different approach.  Think about it.

There are different types of players, different approaches to the game, different budgets. My POV is always a thrifty one.

The best side of this thread (and others) is to get multiple opinions, each based on individual experience and focus. We can't possibly devaluate these just because we think different.

I for one think that alternatives like Solarflare's must be checked - they may fit better to certain conditions or preferences, and of course, there are other paths to bliss...

I wouldn't go quite that far, but it certainly was a game-changer. At my tier at the time it sure led to a lot of good wedge practice.
