I was partnered with a Champion, who gave me hell for using a chip shot from the fringe, 8 yards from the cup. He insisted -- and both our opponents backed him up, at some length -- that the chip was the worst shot in WGT, and that the only shot that made sense from there was a flop.

Well, this newly minted Chumpion likes both, but my experience is that the flop is MUCH harder to learn to use effectively. They may have been trying to get your game to go backwards.

I use both shots from fringe or just off, mainly depending on whether I'm going to be landing upslope or down.

That other shot, pitch, I have little use for except from sticky rough.

One of the best players I've ever known told me that he only used two shots, Full and Putt. Yep. Do what you know best, but that is overboard allegiance  to the KISS method.

The advice given to join a CC is a good idea. In addition to playing with nice people you can also learn a lot more about shots. Forum advice can always help.  You can also see how friends play and when they make a great shot when you thought the shot might have been at an awkward distance or rough conditions you can ask how they made that shot and their ideology on shot selection

x 1000!!!  Very clearly remember some time ago in A/S match on Merion, 4th hole, oppo had what I thought was a very difficult 3rd from just off the fairway some ways out to the back pin and he absolutely NAILED it.  Asked him HOW???  First time I'd been shown the punch shot, now one of my real go-to's.

A 64W chip trumps that flop all day from there. A Champion that espouses a flop over a chip from that position needs to have his/her head examined. The chip is an exceptional shot if you take the time to learn it and was totally correct from that lie. It's only the worst shot if you never learned it.

im wondering if K7JBQ was on the par 3, 13th ( if i remember rightly ) at congressional....188 yards to pin (champ tees ) ??

if you land on the fringe above the cup i find a choked flop shot full back is the only way to stop the ball near to the pin...a short chip would see it fly past the hole and then a struggle for par as it is all way downhill.....

i use chip / pitch and flop depending on the lie but would pick a chip any day for anything under 12 yards...

DR,    many of us used to use our own "rulers'  Nothing wrong with that.  Once I could afford better putter, the meters were fine without my own.  Not a Cheat... just a visual aid.
