lee22sharon: Yes,it is true, fewer guns mean less opportunity for a regular law abiding person to be able to protect himself and his family against the criminal or a person who is in a mentally dangerous state of mind.
I'm coming from a country, where there are no gun stores, period. Only people allowed to carry are body guards, security guards (but only the ones transporting money), police (only when on duty) and military (again, not in their free time). We also allow registered hunters and sport shooters (the once that actually train and compete) to buy hunting rifles (hunters, of course) or small caliber rifles and pistols (sportsmen). That's it.
We've never promoted guns, neither in politics, nor in the entertainment industry. There's next to zero guns on the black market. We have less than 10 murders a year (nation wide), with less than half being gun related, which is good, despite the fact there's only 2 million of us.
I understand it might be a tad late for this in your country, but don't tell me it can't be done. A culture has what a culture promotes.
