    My driver stats are great

You weren't talking about stats, you were talking about distance.

I bought my driver because it colour coordinated with my pants...It seems to be as good a criterion as any.

The difference between a good player and a great player, always boils down to the short game; and especially putting.

To wit: good putting = how well a player can read the greens. The actual putter used almost never makes a difference in talented hands.

    +1

There are only a few holes that I give any real thought to my drive. Usually, I just (metaphorically) grip it and rip it... just getting it in play. From there it's a test of the approach, the short game, and the putter.

That's not to say that the drive never matters. Of course, it does. And on a few holes it can be crucial to having a shot at a birdie (or even a par). The 17th on St. Andrews comes to mind. But for the most holes, I don't worry too much about the distance of the drive.

Its kind of because of the way you play it. If you do start pursuing greater distances , more possibilities you might run off in the rough sometimes.

We should be able to average 320 and max out more closer to 370-380 but were not.

Thats just not possible as apart from St A , the fairways are too soft(or balls spin too much) and don't vary wrt to the green speeds.

I just did some research on the average driving distances of the top 5 WGT players right now (monthly leaders) versus the top 5 PGA tour players average driving distances.

WGT Players averaged 306 yds. per drive

PGA Players averaged 312 yds. per drive

So they're virtually identical. In other words, the data hardly support the conclusion that longer drivers are needed.
