St Andrews #16 (back pin) 8.2 ft putt 2 in down, vf green, almost no perceptable dot movement in chip or putt view. Ball is short of pin to the left. I hit the putt 6.5 ft & ding it but the putt misses the hole to the right without even touching the lip.
My question is, why did the putt miss? Is this a case where you just have to know this particular putt from experience to realize that it's going to break? Did I miss something in my read that should have told me the putt would break? Is this something built into the code for the game? Occasionally random things happen and there's nothing that can be done except shrug your shoulders and move on to the next hole.
My sense from playing this game over 4000 rounds and from talking with other players and reading the wgt forums is that the cause here is the last one mentioned. However I really hope that this is not the case. It would be very difficult for me to keep on playing this game and trying to improve my scores if I know that I have limited control over where the ball goes once it is hit.
