I've been playing this game for a while now, and the only thing I really don't like about it, is the inconsistencies, when it comes to how the wind effects the ball, how there is not any spin on the ball etc. I will give you a few examples of what I am talking about, hitting in to a 19-20mph wind, draw back on the meter where the max distance is 110yds, the shot you need is 90yds, so you hold back to about 90% allowing for wind to take approximately 10yds off the ball and less the 10% it should be damn close, but nope instead you over shoot the green completely, ball travels 105yds in the air and rolls another 20 off the green!! well done!! The other real issue I have is the greens, I mean who made this crap up? I've had a 7yd chip shot roll 30yds past the hole, 30 freakin yds past the hole!!! give me a break. And I don't want to hear from anyone saying oh it must be this or that, it's the game being ludicrous in it's programming nothing more simple than that. It takes away the enjoyment of the game and really needs to be addressed. Anyway, thats my rant for today, thanks for listening. :)

For what it's worth I've found, over the past 2 1/2 years I've been playing, that the inconsistencies I run into are generally caused by me.

For wind dig around on the forums and find a link to Bilko's Wind Calculator. There are two versions; they both work.

For chips don't forget to take the green speed and slope (up or down) into account. For example, let's say I had that same 7 yard chip on a Tournament (11) green with 4" of down slope. I would use my 64 degree wedge which is rated for chipping at 7 yards. I would multiply the distance in yards X 3 to get it in feet, then subtract 4 for the 4" of down slope, just like I would when putting. (7 x 3) = 21; (21 - 4) = 17; then multiply the distance in feet by your speed adjustment for that green speed. (17 x .8) = 13.6. Then divide the distance in feet by 3 to get it back into yards, then divide that by the rating of the club for that shot. (13.6 / 3) = 4.53; 4.53 / 7 = 64.7% or 65%. A lot of players like to put backspin on their chips. I don't. It's strictly a matter of personal preference. How far the ball actually travels will also depend on the ball you personally use. Practice will give you the a feel for the adjustments you need. This also seems like it takes a long time. Once you get used to the calculations you can whip right through it.

There are a few things to take into consideration here.

First, there will always be some inconsistencies in the game. You can always expect that. Personally I like the little hiccups here and there. Keeps me on my toes.

Distance into the wind. What balls were/are you using? It can take a while to get used to the distance of different balls.

As for the chip shot you speak of, was the ball in the rough? Spin will not work coming out of the rough.

Was the shot down hill? What green speed where you playing?

This isn't a " this or that " answer. It's what the game demands.

Being a member of the Pinhunters I'm quite sure you can find all the help you'll ever need there.

What is a pastime without enjoyment?

They won't change the nature of the game, so you'd have to be the change. Just do it!

If all would be consistent the game would become boring after a short while.

If I want something consistant boring I read all those complains in the forum.

Well, to be clear, you've been playing for less than 2 months and have fewer than 100 ranked rounds. And there's nothing wrong with that. But you're still learning the game. What you're experiencing is not necessarily inconsistencies. It's simply the case that you're still learning the game and how it plays.

Additionally, the clubs you're playing are probably, at best, average. You might want to consider upgrading your irons. The Ping (L59+) irons would be a huge improvement over what you currently have.

I agree 100% with Robert and would also add upgrading your balls to something like the Cally L33's would also increase your consistency. Then as you get to L76 start to exchange your wedges for the higher level Clevelands (thanks Mainz). It's just a matter of keeping on keeping on and wanting to improve, learn from your errors and read all the relevant info on these forums and crib what you think will help you improve.
