I understand that if you move up a tier during a tournament, you still finish the tournament in the tier you started in.  For example.  If you started a tournament as Amateur, it's possible to move up to Pro during the tournament, but you would still be ranked in the Amateur tier for that tournament because that is the tier that you started in (future tournaments you would be ranked in the appropriate tier).

My question -- Is it possible to move up 2 or 3 tiers (or more) during a tournament?  I'm still at Amateur and find it odd that so many players are in the Amateur tier but their rank is Tour Pro or Master (2-3 tiers above Amateur), we beginners are battling it out with those who have been placed in a tier that appers to be too low for their advanced and excellent skills.  If someone is jumping 2-3 tiers during a tournament, is it possible they are in the wrong tier to begin with?

I am not trying to take anything away from the skilled players -- they clearly have earned and deserve to be in the top.  I'd just like the chance to be on the same playing field with those of my tier/level -- beginners, amateurs -- who are trying to get up there and increase our skill and get to the next level of the tier to Pro, then Tour Pro and upwards.

Someone playing ranked rounds for 3-4 (heck, even more) hours a day, can roll through the lower tiers pretty quickly.

    That's why you'll see TP's in the AM tourney's

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Your explanation does make sense to a certain extent, but then this brings me back to the question: If someone is jumping 2-3 tiers (or more) after playing a tournament, is it possible they are in the wrong tier to begin with?  This appears to be one of the quirks of the tournaments -- players are eventually placed in their appropriate skill tier but until then the competition (primarily in the lower tiers) is a bit skewed.

It's just that it's a bit disheartening to see an AM leaderboard (my current tier) with so many scores in the high 60s to mid/high 70s range, instead of the AM 80s range.

    Thank you for listening.

P.S.  Yes, I practice daily.  Not able to practice for 3-4 hours, but am getting in 1-2 hours and am gradually decreasing my score (yah).  So eventually I'll be in a higher-ranked tier and recognize that this tournament quirk will be less of an issue at the higher tiers. Until then-just wanted to voice what the beginning tiers "see" when they play tournaments.

    RE: legitimate new players...

How can WGT know what tier someone belongs in, until they start to shoot..?

As in all walks of Life..some ppl just 'get' certain things, quicker than others..

Everyone will find their rightful place in the end.

    Happy Hitting

Andy, thanks for your frank response.

Wasn't expecting WGT to have psychic powers, just pointing out an imperfection in the tournament system that some newcomers face in an otherwise very enjoyable and challenging game.

    As you say...

...... I count myself  very fortunate to be one of the ppl who 'get' real Life quicker than virtual Life...... so I'll continue my climb up the virtual WGT ladder at a  somewhat slower pace than others and will find my 'rightful place' and will look forward to competing with you when I do.

Until then, Happy Hitting to you too, Andy.

Thank you for the opening Andy........My first wring.

The area I really need help on right now is putting.  My GIR is way too low (33%).  And even if I get on the green, getting close enough to the hole so that my putt isn't always 30+ is a challenge for me. Or I just play-ring-around-the-flagpole (although not as often).

Now I've made some birdies as a result of some gorgeous long putts (and that's exciting to watch), but I know my short game is hurting my score.

Any and all advice for increasing my GIR and/or putting pointers will be 'preciated.

    Karen

P.S. Since I'm new to WGT, what is the etiquette for continuing on a discussion that is no longer related to the original topic? Should I send you a friend invite?

    Squeeze away... ;-)

Putting methods are many but I use these calcs..

Standard greens.. + or - the elevation and hit it that yardage + 1ft extra power on a flat green

Fast greens is the above but no extra power

V fast greens is + or - the elevation then divide by 1.1

    Tourney 11 stimp is ^^^ & divide by 1.2

    Tourney 12 stimp..divide by 1.3

Champs 13 is divide by 1.4

You can see the elevation of a putt in inches or feet in the blue box when putting, it'll have an arrow up or down.

eg: 17ft putt with 2 inches up on v fast greens would be  17 + 2 divided by 1.1 = 17.27, so I'd hit that @ just under 19ft power...

Now all of the above will get you within a couple of feet but....

..uphill putts may need a little more on certain courses/ holes and downhill putts on the faster greens will need a little less....that's where the damn practice bit comes in. ;-))

The clubs you have do not really lend themselves to great scoring but good learning tools...till better wedges / irons further down the line.

You'll find most threads here, go off topic in the end..... so, NW's  ;-)))

    Friend request sent K..

    Evening Andy

    Received the FR  : )

And many, MANY thanks for taking the time to write down your putting tips. Just bought a new putter a few days ago and am getting used to it.  Starting using your calcs immediately and am having better success---a few more pars, and more bogeys insteads of bogey+s.  Working on shaving this down to a lot more pars and some birdies, and so on.

Understand that my current clubs are hurting me.....a few days back was able to get a free rental of TaylorMade R11 Irons and noticed an improvement (9-hole 37).  So am definitely saving up for better clubs.

Which brings me to another squeeze ----What are your recommendations on best clubs for the credits?
