I hit my tee shot on RSG number 11, left and below the hole onto the fringe. My caddie pulls out the putter and I decide to go with his choice as the putt looks fairly straight, up 2 feet and about 47 feet in length. After a survey of the putt I go ahead and hit it. Next I hear the clunk as it hits the bottom of the cup, and that weird guy in the gallery shouting "Amazing, simply amazing!"   The scorecard comes up and I am awarded a 2.

Now the interesting part. After I finish the round, I do a quick check of the stats and I notice that the made putts distance is about 40 feet. Strange, since I did make a 47 foot putt. I also see that I took 11 putts. So I go to the scorecard and for total putts it lists 12.  I now have a Zen moment when I realize that a putt that I made is not a putt but it is a putt.

And I have no idea if WGT took one stroke off my ball usage or gave me a "free" putting stroke. I do know that they credited me with a holed shot of 17 yards and "lost" a putt. Certainly a Charlie Crews moment from an old TV show called "Life".

Only putts from the green count as putts, you played an approach shot with a putter. You successfully non-putted using a putter. Simple really.

Is a wedge shot from on the green a putt?

Does it take a hit from your ball? Does it count in your putt stats for the round?

    Addled minds need to know...

Two lists, two numbers. The putt from the fringe is counted as "a putter shot" on one side and as "not a putt" on the other side.

Paul, I'm gonna answer your nosy questions in the quote, in bold:

    PaulTon:
Is a wedge shot from on the green a putt? Nope.

Does it take a hit from your ball? Yes

Does it count in your putt stats for the round? Nope

Also, a putt from the fringe costs a shot on the ball.

Brilliant phrasing - here's the real world counterpart - brilliant play by this sly old fox but confusing at first:
