  Only if the one ball condition has been invoked, usually by the course or tournament committee. Otherwise you can provided it is in between holes.

  As far as I am aware, the order of play in golf has always been determined either by drawing names from a bag, the short stick/straw method, or variations thereof, or as has become prevalent of late, the toss of a coin.

  This concerns the order of play on the first tee, Rules of Golf §10.2 a for stroke play and is valid unless the CC issues a list of players in the groups.

  Which is drawn at random from a bag/box

  WGT copies the latter.

  I beg to differ: §10.2 b states:

  "After the competitors have started play of the hole, the ball farthest from the hole is played first."

  WGT follows this rule with one exception common to casual real play IIRC: a closer ball outside the green is played before an "away" ball on the green.

  Balls, players, now you are using a play on words.  The player whose ball is farthest(from the pin) away,  is the person that hits first after all have completed their prior shots.  Now, would you also like to discuss honors, concerning the next hole.

  This may be your local experience, but it ain't fixed in the rules. Here, players are either voluntarily selected for similar mixed HCP groups (=equal playing speed),
  or (in a majority of tournaments) it is strictly by HCP, lowest first.

  AFAIS, even PGAtour selects the players in the first rounds to get interesting groups.

  And what will the players do, except of playing their balls? It's synonymous, as Gary stated above.

  Check beginning post. I added a full analysis of the time required to play a 9-hole with different numbers of players.

  Enlightening at the very least.

  Obviously WGT would gain from this quite a bit, as players would be hitting the ball more often leading to more balls to buy as they wear out as we all know. And also, I believe all in all the game would be more exciting thus we would be playing slightly more.
