Flop shot works fine for me on most holes.  The only place I might have a gripe is ST. Andrews 14th hole par 5.  It doesn't seems to stop when you're just in front of the green and try a flop shot but then again it's a downhill hole from there.  I've actually found the flop to be more reliable than the pitch for me.

Yep, have to play that one a fair bit softer than normal. Useful when 19yds or 20 yds away though.

14ft is a funny hole all round. Pin at the front, usually end up not making the green. Pin in the middle, club right down (sometimes two clubs and still end up past the hole.

Plus that little slopes a ***.

My wife says I'm a complete flop. But strangely she doesn't play golf.

IK totally agree with you but i do find when playing any shot, over 20 yards the 64w TM wedge stops the ball alot quicker and even will stop, inside a few feet with a tail wind on the 14th :-)

Flop shots are a totally mixed bag for me. I could have 2 identical shots, with 2 totally different outcomes. 1 day, a 19yrd flop with 20% lay will go the hole, next day the same shot and lay will go 2 yrds?

The flop shot is the easiest shot around the greens to master when you are learning the game. It's great for distance control and you can very quickly become very adept at it. Anything over 25 yards I always found a lot harder and tended to avoid using it for those distances.

The pitch shot, whilst harder to control on distance, does give you a better chance of holing out. It's definitely worth persisting with. If you can become very good at chipping, pitching and using the flop, you really have all bases covered for each situation.

Same here 2-1, i had 2 shots one from rough which I holed out and the other from the bunker which never made it out. Both shots were 10' and 20% lie, go figure. lol

I've found that 20% sand is equivalent to about 30% rough.  Sand also tends to be a lot less forgiving on mishits (or on less-than-100% shots).

My notes show a flop from 20% sand carries 2 to 3 yards less than a flop from 20% rough given the same power.  It doesn't surprise me your bunker shot didn't make it out if you hit them the same power using a 64 wedge.

Flops out of bunkers don't work too good if you're too far away from the side. You have to make sure the trajectory gets it over the edge.
