The flop shot is the easiest shot around the greens to master when you are learning the game. It's great for distance control and you can very quickly become very adept at it. Anything over 25 yards I always found a lot harder and tended to avoid using it for those distances.
The pitch shot, whilst harder to control on distance, does give you a better chance of holing out. It's definitely worth persisting with. If you can become very good at chipping, pitching and using the flop, you really have all bases covered for each situation.
