DannyPhan:
Iva are you more into Ska, Dancehall, RockSteady or just plain old Reggae?
I grew up in Belize in the 60s and 70s so I like those as well as a lot of Latin music as well.
Check out this by Mana the video reminds me of what "Hotel California" might be like "You can checkout, but you can never leave"
That is a good question. I love music of all kinds. I suppose I am just a product of where or how I was raised. I'm a first generation Canadian. My parents are both from the caribbean, Jamaica and Trinidad. Where I was born and raised was about the the whitest, countriest place you could get. So, I grew up with Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff at home. At school, you had Garth Brooks and stuff, or hair bands, or the start of late 80s/earlier 90s hip hop...depending on the group you were with. Also, it was kind of an awkward time in lots of ways, being different than all my classmates. Young girls especially seem to try to emulate singers they like and stuff. So, I'd look to the Whitney Houstons and friends would be looking to the Madonnas, and we'd all end up looking like true fashionistas. Then I went to college in the US, and I was in a more urban and multicultural environment, and away from home. So late 90s to mid 2000s, started getting more into the hip hop, R&B and even looking more into island music as I started actually thinking about "where I came from". So, now, in my 30s, finally making a dollar or two, I really try to get to Trinidad as often as is practical. My grandma is still alive and still living there, and it lets me immerse myself in the food and music and culture of where half of me is from (if that makes any sense at all).
Wow, I have written a book! Um, getting to your question.
Totally down with the Reggae, I like Ska, love the Dancehall, and really developing something for the Soca thing. In the car, I'm listening to Top 40 generally, at home maybe BET or something off satellite. Love to dance so I need a beat. I like Latin music a lot. We got the booty thing going on, but Latinas, dang, they got that hip thing just bangin'! Wish I could figure out how that works. HA.
Since I'm babbling, I'll share a kind of recent music story. Last week went to Calgary to visit my brother and ski for a couple days. We decide to go to a club, I do myself all up, heels, big hair, booty jeans, the whole deal. We get inside, and it's "country" night. We didn't stick out at all - my brother and his dreads and his sister Chaka Khan...lmao. Actually turned out to be super fun. I two stepped with a bunch of cowboys all night and was actually kinda diggin on the music.
Wow, so what have we learned about Iva? One, she babbles incessantly. Two, she doesn't really know what she likes for music, but really likes music. Three, basically she is a huge nerd. Yep, that about covers it.
