Right now all my clubs have matching meter speeds except the putter.  R11 D and 3w, Ping G10s, 3x Cleveland wedges.  They stay that way 99% of the time over the last year or so even as I have experimented with various other clubs.

I have added both the Ping i15s and the TM Burner 2.0s when they came out but I find that my consistency suffers not only from having to adjust to the slightly faster meter speed of the irons, but also the slower swinging clubs left in my bag!

I don't mind the faster meter... I think that the Burners are significantly better than the G10s but after a number of rounds I find that I just can't nail the dings anywhere near as frequently as I can when my whole bag has matching meter speed... and anybody knows that it's critical to nail the ding when you're trying to get a 200+ approach with a long iron tight to the pin.  That's maybe a difference of having a 5 foot tapper and a 20 foot double-breaker.

I have 1 experiment left... Go back to the R9 Supertri Driver and Ping i15 3W to go with the Burners, then the meter speed would be consistent from D through PW.  But then I'd be giving up distance, precision and forgiveness on those 2 clubs... plus my wedges are still mismatched.

Hate to sound @nal, but I'm wondering if anybody else is struggling with this.

    Cheers

Nobody took the time to do this excellent research. I would like to know how the meter stumbles/jerks were accounted for. Are these averages of many swings with each club or is there something more technical involved?

Thank you for that great answer, Nash. I use your second scenario with the Burner irons and it's livable if you consciously tell yourself "faster meter" when you use them after a drive. Otherwise you're pushing them.

That's some outstanding research there Nash.  Soooo... in the interest of science, how many Cally balls did you sacrifice?

@YJ:  As a player that might forget to adjust the putter to the intended distance increment maybe once out of 100 putts... having to remember that the club I'm holding in my hand is slightly faster, then go back to the slower, then faster, then slower throughout the round is too much to ask.  Too many other things that you have to account for in the setup and preshot routine to worry about variations in the execution.

Hell, a couple of days ago I had a career round going at RSG when I got to the par 3 240 yd. #11.  Forgot to club down to 3W and blasted the driver out of bounds.

The less "brain farts" you have out there, the better you do.  The game is hard enough that you can't make unforced errors if you want to be competitive.

I totally agree. It takes way more total focus than I have to do it 18 times in a row. Throw in the TV or the game on the radio for more distractions. LOL-just ain't happening.  :-D

As validation, I shot my career round today with the ole G10s in the bag.  Whew, safely in in the Open Championship!  Still left a curling downhill 7.5 footer out there that woulda given me a 53. lol
