9th Hole at Bethpage Black

  OK.....so I play with the basic balls (when WGT stops taking good balls "out of play" maybe I'll start buying them again).....what's the deal?

   

  You can hit a tee shot on the screws and you still can't make the fairway. You'll be short and in the deep rough with NO chance of making the green in 2 shots.

   

  What's the point?

  I could be wrong but from Bethpage #9 Legend tee the pointer shows the fairway starting at around 200yds? Not sure why you are having trouble... even with the free balls.  -Keith

  You have to be thinking of another hole because that doesn't sound like the 9th hole of Bethpage.
  
  The 18th hole of Merion, however, could be problematic from the back tees and the starter balls. Is it possible that you're thinking of that hole?

  If he is trying to cut the corner with starter balls I can see where he would have a problem. But with starters the smart shot would just  try to hit the fairway.. Of course his first sentence in  the first post in the thread should show that he has no clue.

  That hole is a biter no matter what ball you use . Either pin and no matter which tee it all depends on the game deviation . I would suggest though to the OP that they upgrade their clubs , at least the driver and 3 wood .

  No doubt, it's a tough hole. Rarely do I land my approach close to either pin. 
  
  In the clash earlier today, I was left with an approach of about 235-yards, into a 11-13 mph wind that was going just a tick left to right. Pin was on the right side of the green. For me, the best thing to do was to aim for center-left of the green. Didn't ding my 3-wood but still ended up about hole high about 25-feet away. I was fine with that.
  
  From there, that's really not all that difficult of a putt. A two-putt is pretty much certain. I happened to sink it for a birdie. :-) But I would have been very happy with a par.
  
  A person just has to manage both the course as well as his/her expectations.
