Hi guys, had this thing written down before but  couldn’t find it. On a green approach, flag showing 6 inchess downhill, how many yards should I deduct? better yet, is there any tutorial on this? thanks

    SlickHunter:
On a green approach, flag showing 6 inchess downhill,

Do you mean feet? 6" is basically flat.

Elevations are usually shown in feet so if you divide that by 3 to get the yards, add that number if the green is uphill and subtract it if it's downhill. This is a general rule, you still have to factor in wind and landing area.

Another way to think of it is uphill shortens your clubs and downhill lengthens them.

    Ok thanks..got it.

YJ, Isn't this the other way around?  On approaches I add yards for uphill and subtract yards for downhill.  That's what you meant, right?  P

I'm thinking in terms of carry as another way to look at it. The elevation interrupts the shot arc going uphill and lengthens it going downhill. You are right in what you say, it's what I said in the first paragraph. I'm just giving a visual reference that may help to understand what's happening and how you adjust for it. You got it.  :-)

+1  Then there are those holes where we apply this logic and the shot acts the opposite way...you know, the ones that make us go  "hmmmmmmm"...and then...we make a mental note.  LOL

You have to be careful applying this to all clubs because the closer you are to the elevation, the less it affects the shot. Longer shot arcs like with the higher irons are going to be affected more than the shorter ones. A wedge will have a high, short arc and comes down on a more perpendicular plane and tends to stop whereas the longer irons with a flatter shot arc will come in at an angle that produces a roll.

Yeah, a lot of factors to consider..constant practice should take care of that.

Also there are some holes where every thing you think you know about hitting to an elevated green goes out the window. Like # 4 @ BPB with the front pin. I think I’ve hit that green with that pin and stayed on 2 or 3 times  in almost 9 years. Even the irons with the highest trajectory and highest spin rate come in so flat that it is almost impossible to stop the ball. The back pin isn’t quite so bad but we rarely get that pin.

Not every hole are true with their stated elevation. There’s this one hole, always put my ball in the water, because the elevation is not what it seems..lost few balls before I realized it.
