Ben Hogan - Merion #18

  Back in the 50's with this one.

  I've never been able to see any replay of Ben Hogan's famous shot during the U.S. Open 1950 played at Merion. Photographs of his last swing movement at the 18th are lots but no video, nowhere.

  Well, I think it did not go that much differently from this replay made early this morning. I have the distance but not the right position but it was amazing see the final roll of the ball, indeed. After over 20,000 ranked rounds I consider it one of my most beautiful shot ever.

  A great shot indeed David, that's a tricky hole to get near the pin, let alone hole out.  : )

  I read somewhere that no one really knows what club he hit. Some say  1 Iron, Some day 2 Iron and a few said 3 Iron. No matter what club he hit,itt was an awesome ***.

  It was a 1 iron, despite what Hogan himself wrote later.

  I saw in an interview with Greg Norman a while back and he stated that the 1 iron from the old days is equivalent to todays 3 iron.

  As far as I know loft, lie and length. I assume there're nearly identical, just that one had a "1" stamped on it and the other a "3"
