Ok ill tell ya what i did and what happened. Can you explain why so i can fix this for the future shots.

    The Ocean Course!

    Hole 12

    Par 4

Approach shot was 145 yrds, wind is at 11o'clock 10-12mph tail wind

It tells me to hit a 7i (160yrd) club. I choose a 8i (145yrd) club. I hit it at 90% giving 10 yrds for the wind, No back spin,Aimed 5yrds to the right.

I dinged the shot and the ball travels 126 yards and stops. no roll no bounce. Just stops.

Ive noticed this same thing about not getting the yardage i should of from the club and or ball.

My questions is why did it come up so short with that tail wind and why did it stop so fast with no back spin put on the ball?

    Thanks

i don't know your club and balls but for mine i would have only take off 6-7 yards off for the wind you described.

plus 90% off a 145 yard club would take off 14.5 yards.

plus i would have hit the shot with full backspin so it's in the air longer.

My guess is you hit an upslope in front of the green with a flat trajectory and it killed the ball.

but as an example: ive played those irons when i was leveling up.

with the balls i used Full backspin takes off ~5 yards from the listed yardage. So 145=140

So i'd have played the 8i with FBS and hit it about 98.5%. And that's assuming there wasn't any elevation changes on the shot.

Two things--you're adding too much for wind and 90% of a swing doesn't translate to 90% of the yardage.

In your example, your 8i was a good choice and you have to ask yourself-what happens if I hit this full with no spin? With your ball and that wind you're probably looking at 150+. Your 8i does not roll out like higher irons so without doing anything other than backing off a full swing, you're going to get  close. Maybe a lil bs to slow down the roll the wind will cause.

If you know the carry of your irons your shot choices becomae a little easier to envision. I played those same irons, too, and used the 33 Callaway with them. They really play well by laying off the spin and knowing their carry.  Partial spin will control rollouts. :-)

What was elevation of hole?  (probably small difference?)

Who/what is "It" that told you to hit the 7i.  The caddy?

I credit that wind with 7 yds tail and about 4 ft of drift at the hole.

Do you have your clubs and ball mapped, or just relying on the caddy, or just memory?

All good answers. Just one thing to add: Every now and then you'll get a knock down with a tailwind, particularly with the shorter clubs. Happens in real life, too.

One thing that everyone appears to have over looked is the club chosen. The dreaded 8 iron that has a reputation of being somewhat inconsistent distance wise. And choking down to as low as 90% makes it even more inconsistent.

I have come to the same conclusion with this club as well. I mapped them all out over the past weekend and the 8ir did what is was suppose to as long as i put no Back spin on it. But even 1.3 back spin i would loose up to 4 yrd on my shot and full was over 12yrds .

Ill keep trying to figure them but always seems something with these clubs!
