Yes, hitting intp the water may well be realistic, but removing my brand new bal and forcing me to use a new one (bye bye a decent wad od cash) is theft? In REAL life I'd roll upmy trousers, get in the stream and retrieve the ball...there are no alligatorsd at St Andrews. Come ON WGT!!! How mean spirited to you want to be? Penalty stroke? OFC! Force me to buy a new ball? VERY VERY questionable, particularly to introduce such a thing without warning. Stop it please.

Didn't you miss the warning in the 8 1/2 years that you have been around here?

IMHO, ball wear and loss is part of a "green fee". Good thing about it, it's up to you how much it is, and it starts with ZERO!

Wrong,  lucky enough they'd allow you to continue the round with the free ball.

    where have you been?

But....for future reference, plenty of info available on the FAQ page.

What happens if I run out of balls during a round?

When you reach the hit limit for the ball you are using it will be replaced automatically with a new ball of the same type and color. If you do not have any more of the ball type and color in your inventory then the Basic ball will be inserted. The Basic ball is the ball provided to you when you first start playing WGT. Once you play with the Basic ball you cannot change balls during your round.

What happens if I lose a ball Out of Bounds or in a Water Hazard?

If you hit a ball OB or into a Water Hazard that ball will be removed and will be replaced with a new ball of the same type and color if you have one. If not, it will be replaced with the Basic ball.

You can't climb in the water at St Andrews.  Not allowed - uncouth.

BTW - I wish I could find your first post - it must have been a doozy!  I know mine was!

    ;)

It’s the best part of the game, hitting over or by the water is the most exciting part of this game. Without hazard penalty, it’s just plain boring, just like any other games. Suck it up people!

    Hi John

I agree, I feel your pain. There's nothing worse than that  *splosh*  as your cherished ball heads towards Davy Jones' Locker.  99 - 100% H2O is not a happy place to land.

I decided to have a quick look for myself, so I could judge your pain better but . . . .

Dangit!!  Not even a itchy rash on the pain scale. I admit, I do like to go for my shots so I think I could probably challenge John the Baptist with my

As far as St Andrews goes, here are a couple of near misses. Both could have finished with a final rinse . .

But luckily the tide was out and I hit creekbed. Both landed safely. On some holes I think a tidetable is just as important as a putting calculator.

Recently, I haven't washed many at all. Not sure if my game has improved that much but I've just stopped hitting them into it.

    Cheers!

Dangit!!  That'll teach me not to flap my gums.  Congratulatons Don  . . . . I think.

Makes me look like an amateur.

A side note to all this, where do they all go? Surely some of the smaller lakes/ ponds should have been filled in by now.

if they do avatars here, can we have one for 'straight over the head' please?

The POINT is not that hitting into the water doesn't deserve a penalty, it's that it costs you a brand new ball. Sigh.

A free ball is NOT free, it does not replace an expensive bought ball does it? I suspect that some of  the fanboys above must be much richer than me but it doesn't matter how rich one is, shady 'let's grab a bit more of their cash' practice is still that, and it goes against the spirit of golf in the real world. Shame really.
