if they do avatars here, can we have one for 'straight over the head' please?

I think this is the part that most people found strange:

    johnaland:

VERY VERY questionable, particularly to introduce such a thing without warning.

Your comment implies this is something WGT introduced at some point.  They didn't, it's always been this way.

A ball in the water is always annoying, here and in real life.  Problem is, in which water hazards would you want WGT to allow you to find the ball again?  Where do you draw the line?  The assumed depth of the water isn't good enough, a ball can be lost in a couple of inches of water if there's soft mud under the water.  Or you might hit a ball into water 4 feet deep but with sand in the bottom and recover it easily with a retriever.

I suspect that some of  the fanboys above must be much richer than me but it doesn't matter how rich one is, shady 'let's grab a bit more of their cash' practice is still that, and it goes against the spirit of golf in the real world. Shame really.

First off, I can tell you that the people that replied are knowledgable WGT players and are NOT fanboys.  Learn their screen names and assume they are giving you good advice unless their post is full of smilies.

Second - this is not real world golf.  This is a game of rules that exceed those in RL because it is a computer program.  The program has it's own rules and it applies them systematically.  The loss of any ball OB, in the water, in very limited types of "rough" is a rule that has been in place since before you joined.  It is a known constant that we deal with.  In RL golf, player often lose balls in some of the types of rough that WGT does not consider a lost ball - another rule.

Third, this is a business (for-profit, they hope) and they earn income from various sources.  I suspect advertising, by far, accounts for most of that income and, yes, sale of balls, clubs, passes, boosts, etc., account for some.  These are all defined and none are required for anyone.  You can play with free equipment and/or get free credits.

Just enjoy playing and don't sweat the small stuff.  Life is too short for that!

May you never lose a ball again!  (GL with that!) ;)

I'm right there with you after 5 1/2 years. We don't lose many anymore though

A free ball is NOT free, it does not replace an expensive bought ball does it? Simply because someone offers a different perspective or has a different opinion that doesn't mean they're "fanboys."

And how does it go "against the spirit of golf in the real world"? Seriously, I don't know what that means.

while it may not qualify as a water shot... I want to point out and share that when presented with documentation ( links to the shots or video capture ) , WGT has often replaced a lost ball.  I shared two links with them that illustrated why it seems implausible for my first shot to be regarded as OOB when my second shot with a 3wd only carried 222 yards into a heavy wind.  The first shot would have had to gone at least 240y into the same heavy wind condition to even come close to reaching an OOB position.

To me, this shows WGT is capable of acknowledging some weird or odd things can occur that may not be reflective of normal game play.  While it doesn't get those strokes back I lost, at least I am not out the lost ball as well.

Thank You WGT CS for listening and your prompt reply.

In the future, if others experience a completely implausible or unlikely shot, which I have heard others have experienced as well and reported... it does help to provide a link, save the replay, and share those comparable links with WGT to review.  Just a thought.

I can get over losing a ball, i rarely do but when i do, i lose 3 in a day!! But that's not really the issue. What is tho, is where they put you after you go in the water. In Real golf(PGA), you can move the ball back as far as you want to get a better lie. you just can't advance the ball forward of where they guesstimate it went in. Example, on hole#17 at Kiawah, you go in the water, they put the ball in the weeds at the edge of the tee. So not fair. Any one know of a reason for this anomaly?

I am with you on this aspect.  I have even tried to hit out backwards back onto the tee box to avoid losing another ball because there is no way to hit forward over the water that I know of.  It wouldn't even let me hit a wedge out of the junk back onto the tee box, so I WD just not worth losing more balls.
