I was on a par 3 at oakmont  with a 13mph left to right wind , allowed a generous  amount  of direction   for the wind on the tee shot  and  managed hit the ding  and the ball started off  bang on line  and landed pin high but 9yds from the pin to the right side of the green  , why does this happen ? burner 2.0 irons and callaway z balls were used .

Length of time in the air and slope of green might affect it.

It's called deviation and is frustrating as all get out. You would think a ding would give you your best result but the way the game deviates it's possible your shot hit the outermost part of your deviation circle.

I find that missing by a pixel on the side of the wind keeps this to a minimum. Hard to do but helps keep the ball on line.
