Power Meter - Wind - Elevation - Lie %

  Hello everyone,

  I'm relatively new of wgt, I'm playing since 15 days now and I am lvl 30.

  I'm doing a loooot of practice to understand how everything works but I still have some question about some things I really can't figure out.

   

  POWER METER

  Practicing a lot let me understand that the % of power meter on the button of the screen is not quite a very %. I mean, if I hit with a 190yd club, with 100% of power the ball goes about 190 yd, but if I hit 50% of power, the ball goes like 40-50 yd, which is not the 50% of power.
  I did several tests about it but I can't understand how the power scale works. So it became pretty difficult to understand how to choose the power if 50% on the meter does not correspond to the actual 50% of power
  Has anyone any advice about this?

   

  WIND

  Same here, did a lot of practice with different wind power, but I can't figure out how much wind affect ball trajectory. I mean, if there is 12-14 mph wind to the left, how many yards my ball will go to the left? How can I make my calculation to understand the wind?

   

  ELEVATION

  Here I have my biggest doubts. I really really can't understand how the elevation (up or down) affect the trajectory. I mean, I know what the results are if the inclination goes up or down, but I can't figure out what kind of calculation I have to do to calculate it precisely.
  How much power do I need to increase if I have +30 ft of elevation? And what if the elevation goes down?

   

  BALL LIE % ON ROUGH, BUNKER OR DIRT

  Last but not least, this.
  At the beginning I thought that the % was to subtract to the % of the power meter, but after several try I'm not sure it works like that.
  I tried to hit with the same club at the same distance to the hole with the ball on the fairway and then (just a few yards away) on the rough. It was 30-40% of lie in the rough.
  100% of power but the balls seems to have a very low difference from one shot to another.
  Same test in another place, I had a significant change. I really don't understand how this works.
  The only thing i noticed, is that the bunker really affects the power compared to the rough.
  The dirt is the worst, the ball moves from there about 15-20 yd.
  Same question, is there any easy calculation I can do when I see a lie %?

  Hi David. Welcome to wgt.

  DavidDrills:

  POWER METER

  You are correct. 50% on the meter doesn't go 50% of the distance. With your longer clubs i don't advise hitting any less than 90% unless you're laying up with a driver but then the punch option works just as well. With your wedges however it's all about taking notes and learning what the distances are. There's no set distance as each club has different characteristics. So learning and remembering is the best way.

  WIND

  Again this is more about learning how much the wind will effect the ball. A good tip is to try to miss the ding line on the side that the wind is coming from. There's a few good videos on youtube giving tips about how far to aim in crosswinds.

  DavidDrills:

  ELEVATION

  The general rule of thumb is shots that are uphill shots are divided by 3 and added to the distance. So 30ft uphill divided by 3 you add 10 yards.

  Shots that are downhill you divide by 4 and take it away. So 30ft downhill divided by 4 you take away 7.5 yards.

  DavidDrills:

  BALL LIE % ON ROUGH, BUNKER OR DIRT

  The percentage shown is the amount the ball is buried. So the higher the percentage, the more ball is down in the grass/sand. 20/25% doesn't effect the distance that much. You may lose 5yds but the less spin will counteract it with the small amount of role you get when landing. 30/40% is normally around an extra club needed but you're not going to get much height and next to no spin so this will role out quite considerably. 40/50% is even worse and may need 2 or 3 clubs extra but again it's even less height and more role. I wouldn't advise trying to fly over bunkers if you're far away. Anything over 50% then it's just a case of playing out to the fairway. Or if you have a lot of fairway ahead then a punch shot can get it up there quite a way.

  Remember this: The longer the ball is in the air, the more it is affected by the wind. An uphill shot, will be less affected by wind than a downhill shot in which the ball is exposed to the wind for longer.
