Hi all, i need help here badly. I just played a shot where the wind was only a 3mph headwind (straight at me, no sideways at all). The hole was 135yrds away, 1 ft uphill. I used the G10 level 59 8 iron with 145yrds distance. I used full power on this iron, conbined with the callaway tour i/s level 33 ball with full backspin, and from the fairway also. Considering that shot had an extra 10yrds in distance, i thought this was perfect for the shot. I dinged my shot, and my ball landed at ???yrds? Thats a full ??yrds shorter or longer than the distance the club allows. I know full backspin will take a bit of distance off, but should i have gotten a better result from this shot?

I havent put in the distance it landed at because i want some of the best players here to come back with a reply if they would be good enough to do so. Please let me know what distance you think the ball should have landed at, and If your prediction matches my result, then i will then get a better understanding of what i am doing wrong. Cheers folks.

there are a lot of factors that could end up with different results.  what green speed were you playing on? slow? championship?  and what green?  oakmont greens are faster than kiawah greens. what was the pin placement? in the middle of the green?  right on the edge with a bunker 8 feet away?  if the pin was right on the edge of the green, you would need a much tighter shot.  and though the pin may be 1 foot uphill, what is the elevation of where your ball landed? was it flat?  downhill?  that has a lot of effect on the ball.

i'd  say if the hole was on the back of and near the edge of the green, you hit it too far and it went into the bunker behind it. no wait, the pin was in the middle of the green and you were playing on oakmont with championship greens?  your ball rolled off the green because there was a downhill slope on the backside of the green.

could you provide a litle more information?

hi there i also play the ping g10 irons i have found on most accasions that the ball lands short with that club and full backspin unless i have had a tail wind but headwind i find i have to hit it flat i hope this helps.

Thanks Qbal, it was BPB hole 11. Very fast greens, with the pin placement at the front of the green to the left. The elevation of the green is downhill steeply before the pin there. My ball landed on the green, and it did roll back off the green. But its the landing distance before the ball rolled back that im interested in. Hope this is enough info, let me know if you need anymore, cheers.

I play the same irons.  I would estimate 40% wind factor for that particular club or -1 yd (prox) with a 3mph head wind but with full back spin I would double it to -2 yds.  Taking off 5 yds for the full back spin and with no elevation to factor in, my result would be distance of about 138 yds, probably 140 if I dinged it.  So for 135 I would have played either 9I with 3/4 top spin or 1/2 back spin on the 8 with a 4-5 yd choke.  Basically you are between clubs and those shots are always a challenge.  C

Hit the 135 yard club full with full topspin. Takes the guesswork out of choking and negates the wind plus gives you some forward momentum on landing assuring you of getting to the hole, underneath it.

Thanks folks. Would you be surprised if i said that the ball landed at 128yrds before rolling back down the green. I get why it rolled back down because it landed short, but i dont get why it landed at that distance in the first place. Surely a shot of that distance, and with the factors thrown in, it should have travelled further?

The advertised yardage is not necessarily where the ball will land, but where it should end up. Just my observation, others may disagree. Of course wind and shot accuracy will have an affect.  To see where your ball lands, look at your replay and observe the spot where the ball lands. Then see where it ends up based on the different variables, ie green speed, slope, etc.

    YankeeJim:
Hit the 135 yard club full with full topspin

Just to clarify my suggestion to hit 3/4 top spin with the G10 9 iron, I have gotten +10 yards out of that club with full top.  It is an anomaly I have found only for that club.  Can't explain it.  C

I found with  the G-10 clubs that hitting full backspin into the wind was usually death. I became a much better player when doing as Yankee Jim suggests. Use less club without any spin at all or a little less club with some topspin. Im now getting more uphill putts and less of those difficult side-hill sliders.
