i concur with ALee...but if i may, let me say it another way.

in either view, normal or zoom, the wind indicator is relative to a theoretical straight line drawn from the top center of the game window to the bottom center of the game window.

which if put to practice, means that if you have a very slight right to left, but your avatar is slightly off center to the left, even though the wind indicator shows slight right to left, the wind is actually dead straight.

K6 is a good example of this...on your approach shot, the avatar is often set off center to the left, as if the camera view was that of an on course commentator watching you from the back and right...if you had a 7 o'clock wind on the indicator, the wind is actually dead str8 into your shot.

Thank you for this thread YJim, and for the explanation ALee.

The game after I'd read it, I came to a similar situation on that exact hole (13 Kiawah) and applied "the technique". The shot I made would've been better if I'd remembered to add the 6yds to the shot into the 19mph headwind (3mph=1yd), but after taking the initial screen shots, I forgot to. :/  lol!

Here's the pre-shot wind at the tee:

The pre-shot wind at the green:

The replay from the tee showing track of the ball:

And a couple replay shots of the track at the green:

The shot predictably came-up about 6yds short of pin high, and caught the slope of the green - pushing it right of the pin - But the aim worked-out as ALee said it would, which put the ball pretty much on the right line (if I had hit it a bit harder).

Oh... and I made the 19 foot bird!  :)

    The aim...

    The drop. :)

The back-nine round: Screwed-up with a bogie on 17 (hit into the sand)! Par 3's were giving me problems and had three tap-in pars... :(

    Thanks again, guys!

Lee might be busy, not sure if he reads as much as he used to. This thread is 2 years old.  :-)

Upthread... and two Halloweens ago ;) ... Lee said, "I always (always always) play the wind with respect to that blue trace! Not with respect to the golfer or the 2D view."

As ALee said, that "blue trace" becomes visible when you click (hold) on the aimer doo-hickey with the triangle on it.

Invaluable insight shared then, and still heeded now.  :)

BTW... "Aim Arc"' (the blue trace gizmo) needs to be enabled on the display tab in your game settings... for any of this to make sense.  ;)

Here's a look at the Aim Arc after it has turned into a "red trace" (by selecting a club with a lower-rated distance), along with the shot's result...

Although the "windsock" makes it look like the wind is going slightly to the left, it's almost dead-online with the Aim Arc. The arc of the ball as it leaves the clubface is deceiving in this pic, because of the club's actual loft, but looking at the ball's decending flightpath, one can see that it pretty much lines-up with the arc. It was actually a straight shot... maybe even a bit left-to-right!

Note the position of the camera behind and to the left of me on the mini-map... it is pointing to the right of the hole. That's why using the trace instead of a camera-view to judge winds makes more sense.   GL  :)

Ohhh... I should also mention that the reason I placed the target a bit to the right of the flag was for "illustrative" purposes... the correct placement would've been dead on it, but it wouldn't show in the pic that way.  ;)

The wind direction is relative to a drawn line between the *camera* and the hole. If the camera is not in a straight line behind or in front of the golfer, then the wind indicator will be "wrong".

Check which camera gets you closest to a line between hole and player and use that (or adjust based on what angle the camera has).

In the example above this post, the camera is slightly to the left of the line, thus the wind will play more downwind and less to the side than what is indicated in the picture. Actually it will be pretty close to a straight downwind :)
