Kiawah #4 and #5

  Hi fellow WGT'rs

  I need some advice on Kiawah #4 and #5.  Like most I am sure, I can play the 1st three typically 3 under. Then I hit #4 and #5 and it starts a string of pars that really bog down my round.  So Question #1 is, on #4 is there anyway to get it close to the pin or does the bunker at the front of the green get lots of visitors? and on #5 where is the best spot to aim to stay close to the green? if I go right at it i usually roll 30-35 feet away, if i go to the right i seem to end up with the nasty down hill 30 footer that breaks like crazy? any advice...

  Allways re-read your own text. At the end you say 2 times: "... if i go to the right ..."

  Or is it your version of the Beyonce to the left, to the left ?

  Both holes react strongly to wind condition. Depending upon the distance to the green, #4 should end up being about the same approach for everyone...I have cleared the ball eating ditch only one time...ever. With little wind, the ideal approach is just to the left of the bunker. I have two CTTH aces and one stroke play Eagle there, all with the above application. Nevertheless, hitting the white line makes it happen. 

  #5 is a very hard hole. Again, with little wind, a shot that lands about 20 yards right of the pin, center cut of the green, will gently roll down the super fast, downhill position for a tap in. But par-par on these two holes is very good. It is quite easy to go into them at -3 and come away at -1. Both holes demand a dinged hit.

  join the - probably very large - club.

   

  they both need a shorter iron - with high trajectory - than we have at present. so unless the wind is favourable, then be content with par.

  Even many of the top players say that these 2 holes are par holes. A birdie is a big bonus. Think of these as birdie holes and when you make par or worse you put yourself in a mental funk that makes you play the rest of the round poorly. Think of them as par holes and when you make par or worse it doesn't kill your round.

  I actually really like #4, it's normally a good for me to win a hole in MP, for some reason I seem to get a birdie there more often than not. I have noticed that my irons have made a huge difference though. I usually play my first right up to the edge of the rough,you will find that there is a slight uphill just before the rough so many times when you look like you've over hit it, it will still stop on the fairway(not always though, sometimes you do simply play it to hard, which makes the spin on the second very difficult). The wind obviously determines how I play the second, but if you have high trajectory irons then go for the pin with full bs, I'm not kidding when I say  I usually leave it 1 or 2 ft from the pin.

  I currently have the burners and before them the lvl 58 G10's and both irons produced the same result, again cause of the trajectory(VERY IMPORTANT), before either of the sets of clubs I would agree that it is almost impossible to get close, simply cause you can't get the ball to stop.

  With the right irons and right ball you can get close to the pin on #4 and #5 (except with tailwinds)

  #4 - If you have a good drive to the end of the 1st fairway and a head wind, I like to go with full back spin to the RIGHT of the bunker, just clearing the rough.  If successful, this will leave you a mostly uphill putt.  Otherwise, go left of the bunker and hope you sink a long putt.

  #5 - Very difficult birdie as others have said.  Only chance imo is to hit it at the top of the hill to the right of the hole with about 50% back-spin because of the downhill landing.  Your "good" area is probably about a 6' circle.  If you miss right you are looking at 20-30' downhill, side-hill and if you miss left you are looking at 30+' uphill side-hill.  :-)   C

  He actually says "if i go right at it" meaning directly at it. Then "if i go right" meaning aim to the right.

  Maybe you should re-read his post before commenting

  The 4th is certainly a lot easier a hole if you are playing with Burner irons, the added stop means you can fly it all the way over the bunker and it'll stop within 12 feet. Prior to having these irons I aimed for an area to the right of the flag where there's a bit of a hill on the green. If you fly the ball over the bunker and hit this area it generally kills the pace of the ball and you're left with an uphill right to left putt.

  

  There is another strategy to play the hole but it's one I only go for under the right wind conditions, ie preferably low.

  For a better line into the pin you can aim your drive to the right hand side of the dreaded bunkers on the right hand side of the fairway. The landing area looks really tight but it's not as bad as it looks. You really need to ding it though as any early or late hit will put you in trouble. If you find the fairway you then have a line in from the right of the front bunker and generally the ball stops quicker from there.

  I only go for this when I've made an ass of the first few holes and I'm chasing a birdie to get back on track. It can however completely ruin your round before it's really started.
