DarSum: Exactly. The only time I use flop is on a severe downhill shot from off the green. STA#5 comes to mind from in front.
Strangely enough, the exact shot I thought of too. Then STA 14.....
Apart from that, I normally use pitch for most shots around the green. I don't like hitting with less than 50% power (too much inconsistency in the end result for my liking), so I forced myself to learn alternatives for shots less than 20 yds. The pitch seems to work nicely for the bulk of those....it carries most of the distance, then rolls the last couple of yards into the hole (or at least in theory that's how it works....).
My general shots and distances are below, but to be honest, the situation oftentimes dictates what shot you can or can't hit (ie: STA #5 above). Rough, elevation, slope, and backspin can change my shot selection considerably.
6 yds or less = chip - 64W
7 - 14 yds = pitch - 64W
15 - 19 yds = flop - 64W and 60W
20+ = full shot - 64W and up
Your best bet most of the time though, is simply to hit the shot that you like the most...whatever that might be.
Now, back to the sub-topic.....how the hell do I get the degree sign on Ubuntu? lol
