Can any one explain to me how on championship greens, a 13 foot putt, hit with 11 feet of power stops 6 ins short of dropping in hole, yet on a 48 foot putt with 1 ins down slope hit with 25 foot of power travels 10 foot past?

Its puzzling me because thats a total of 58 feet hit with 25 foot of power (over twice the distance relative to power hit) yet the 11 foot of power doesn't even reach.  i know breaks can speed up or slow down putts, but both were quite flat.

Or could it be on some holes it IS Championship greens, but on others the speed is  actually tournament not championships.

    hi

it depends on a few things... for example... look at #10 cabo from the right... say you have a 50fter and it shows 5up, u hit about 36-39 right? but last 10-12 ft it's like 6 inches down, so if your speed is not perfect, you will be 10-15 ft...therefore ball hit at 36 power can travel 65ft while showing uphill.

same for other way around.. if uphill is at very end, it will play longer...

FWIW, I have only seen Championship greens a couple of times since they were introduced at Oakmont last year and they were nothing like the original. You really had to sweat some of the down hill putts because a miss kept the ball rolling a looooong way-think Oak #2. I haven't seen this in the current Championship conditions.

had the same problem on #1 at oakmont 2k Rg...had 6 ft putt and was so confident on line i hit it the full 6 ft on meter but came up short...couldn't believe it, i had in me head that if i miss cup here i'm in bother in the putt coming back ... live n learn eh

apart from this 1 hole i thought the speed was consistent throughout

That's what got me confused a bit, i hit the 48 foot putt with 25 foot of power knowing it might roll a bit, that's o.k i expect that from championship greens, but the thing i find strange is on tournament greens i hit 11 foot of power all day long for 13 foot putts and they go in, that's why i definitely would have expected it to drop on championship greens.  I remember a lot of putts that do carry more than the slope indicates and what breaks are true or false but must have been caught out with this one on Kiwa, good tip for me is not to forget what i've tried to memorise..lol

Its s0ds law, you don't want to hit it the exact power that shows, i.e if i hit my 13 foot putt 13 feet of power i bet it would have probably rolled 6 feet past, a fine balance, but usually i am an aggressive putter, a lot tend to roll 3 to 4 feet past, any way learnt my lesson.

In fairness this is my own stupid fault, I tried to land the ball beyond the hole and have it spin back. I played this shot with 2 pix back spin. Let this be a lesson to everyone out there who tries to be as stupid as I was playing to Oak no.2 with championship greens in this way.

    wowser!!

was my 1st time yesterday playing that hole with champ greens...thought i'd play it with little top spin so it would stick, as if!!

still rolled back to about 18 ft :)

Does it actually stop when you putt up to the hole, or is there a place where if you don't get enough on it then it rolls back to you?

since i'm a novice of champ greens on oak i'm not too sure if it is possible for the ball to roll back after your putt....this putt of mine however did stop about 3 inches behind the cup..

would like to know what is the best way to play the approach at that pin...is their a way to make it stick? maybe full topspin?!

Not sure about that either, wouldn't like to try it in a ranked game anyway, with that bunker guarding the pin the more shallow topspin approach might not clear it then you have a whole new set of problems lol
