What a BRUTAL night of golf tonight at WTF WGT... 4 or 5 iron shots that were either 'dinged' or off by a hair that mysteriously were WAY off their target...  I expect the usual assortment of lipouts and crap when I have a good round going, but this was ridiculous.  The last straw was the 12th (?) at Kiawah where I aimed middle of the fairway (3 mph wind blowing slightly left) and I missed the ding by the slightest amount possible... and LO and effing  behold, the ball starts RIGHT of the fairway (you know, where the water is)..  and SPLASH!  Taking a break and saving my BALLZ.. thanks guys!!!

"whiskey, tango, foxtrot"     man that brings me back to my Army days lol.....did you serve?

And yes, I know that hole quite well,   I have probably lost more balls in that water than Kia #17.

"by the slightest amount possible" and with a slight right to left wind after aiming at the middle of the fairway.  That normally just straightens the shot out.  Its abnormal to move the ball 20 yards right into the water on a very slight miss.

Thank you... yes, I was penalized at least 20 yards of direction, and the wind was moving left...  I was just surprised at the number of shots that were WAY off line as soon as they left my club... I play a lot, and that rarely happens.  After playing this long, I'm almost never surprised at where the ball ends up... usually have a pretty good idea where itls going based on the ding and how close I was.

As for missing the 'ding', not sure about the rest of you, but I hit it exactly right maybe 1/3 of the time, and I do ok (if I could only putt).   Missing it by a hair rarely impacts the shot at all for me, much less 20+ yards in direction!  I had 2 other similar shots- my 3rd at Kiawah #3 I thought was a 'green light special'.. 80 yards directly into a 4mph wind.. missed the ding a hair early with my 85 yard wedge and the ball ended up left of the green.  On #6 I hit a similar shot that missed the green right.

I did not serve, no.  My current job uses a lot of acronyms which requires us to use the military alphabet.

Thank you for the insight Andy.    Becuase it happens usually, doesn't mean it will happen always.   I will say this till I am blue in the face, you miss the ding all bets are off!

    Cheers,

If you take into account the angle of tee to the angle of the fairway, "middle of the fairway" on #12 is always risky. If you get a good amount o roll or miss to the right like you did, you will always end up right of the fairway - sometimes in the water.

    Go West young man.

I disagree... a miss by a hair does not equal a shank-... unless you are playing in a Ready-Go and have a really good round going ;)

I know what you're saying.. and I tend to err on the left side of the fairway.. I'm not the greatest player here, but I can't remember the last time I hit it in the water on the right, and I play this game daily.  All I know is that the result was far worse than the shot itself
