    Don't get too bold.

    Fairways and greens.

Putting is the most important part so take your time on putts. Learn the breaks.

    GIMMMEEE:

.. Learn the 'flop' shot around the greens,,,   the ball wants to go right off the club when hit squarely, thus a simple technique of hitting the ball on the 'left' marker before the centre one will compensate that drift...........

Why not 'aim' to the left enough to ding the flop? Gauge the distance better imo.Gets more spin too.

Use the right clubs, if the hole is at 111 yard use the 110 not the 120 yarder.

    just wondering

There are a lot of good suggestions in this thread and, in time, you will learn why each suggestion is important. The different shots, the different clubs, articles to read, etc.

But you asked about the single best tip for a newbie. I think everyone here will agree with me that the absolute first thing you should do is:

    Learn to hit the ding

Nothing else matters if you can't hit your clubs; not the ball, not the type of club, not the shot selection, not the wind, nothing...

Learn to hit the ding consistently and the rest will come.
