Why is it that so few people have interest in country club tournaments?

    alosso:

We had this problem when our captain set up 18 hole tourneys, free and for dough.

For many members they seem to long.

A series of 9 hole tournaments, freebees, has found broad response, mainly those with unlimited play. The maximum was about 40 % members participating.

I'm sure that now the more demanding tourneys will find better acceptance.

And yes, there should be always an active tournament.

    Dear Alosso,

18 holes is indeed long and should not be frequently used. I also fancy playing 'unlimited' since you can always recover from a bad day/round and get a descent score in, specially when you have paid an entry fee. Thanks for responding!

We've had over 100 players in CC tournaments at East Coast CC.... Maxwere does an amazing job as the owner and Jeff1026 is the tournament director.  If you are looking for a great club check out East Coast.

    Dear Cycle,

I might indeed just do that, thanks for the tip! Thx for your reply!

Hi ther Voy - It sure is a common problem and one that the CC I am involved in has repeatedly had for several years now.

I organise 5 different weekly events in our CC and we also have Seasonal 12 round League events, matchplay events and many other things going on each week / month...Typically we are getting between 50-70 players playing most events although total membership is 250......so in percentage terms, not a great number at all.

As someone else said earlier, I think a lot of this is to do with participation on the forum and finding out what is happening...For many people joining a CC a lot of them don't even know that a forum exists...It took me a while to find what was happening when I joined a few years ago...Anyway, what we are trying to do now, which is nothing new and have seen in other CC's, but  is to have a couple of us post a welcome message on each new members wall and get them to come and check out the forum and see what is happening, post an introductory message and go from there. They get lots of feedback from the regular forum participants and has improved participation levels. In one of last weeks CC events we had 92 entrants, so definately on the up for sure...

    Cheers

    David

    Hey,

    I think the problems are:

    1. Some members think they have to be a member of a CC, even they're not interested in any activities/ tournaments of the club.
    2. Some players don't know there's a club forum, many players don't take a look in the forum and most of the players don't write in the forum.
    3. Many players are not reading messages to them, I think most of them don't know the meaning if the "message-button changes to green" ... ;-)

In my club we have 100 members. I don't want to upgrade to 250. It's easier to organize a club with 100 then with 250 members.

We're playing weekly 18-, 9-hole- & CTTH-tournaments for a club ranking - participation including WDs - is about 50 players, more players are playing the 9-hole-tournament and the CTTH then the 18-holes. We're playing some multirounds, participation is also round about 50%. I think that's a good quote.

And every player can create tournaments, there are no limits or anything else. The participation is about 20%, sometimes more; that depends mostly on the course, the mode - e.g. I'm not playing unlimited -, 18- or 9-holes and - if not free - on the fee.

For championships taking several weeks - Match Play, Blitzgame and so on - there are only 20 to 25 players. I think it's a time problem ... and the problem No. 2 ...

You will always have players not taking part in any tournament, even they're playing at wgt almost every day. Perhaps you should think about removing inactive players and then limit the account of members to 100 or lower. I think it's easier for you to organize the club and to play more tournaments.

    Finally:

Tournaments with fee are always a problem. There's no handicap rule and most of the time the best players of the club will win these tournaments. And that's disappointing for lower tiers, they only have to pay, but will never win or get the fee back.

Perhaps you organize tournaments only for special tiers ... but then you perhaps have again the problem No. 2 ...

Once again @wgt: It's still getting time for the possibiliy to create cc-tournaments only for special tiers or for special tier-groups, e.g. Pro, Amateur & Hack. I'm looking forward to the cc-updates ... I hope they are coming soon ... :-)

    Best regards,

    Robbie

    Thx for your insight Rob!

About cash tourneys: Of course the better players are in advantage, but some others might participate for the fun of it if the purse is spread among 10 and not among 3.

No need to create cash-machines in CCs - there are RGs!

I thoroughly support the wish for tier-limited tourneys!

    Dear David,

The numbers you mentioned in your comment are huge, I am so jeaulous! :)

The system to attract and reach out new members is also good, no surprise that it is working well. In my CC's forum, not even ONE single member (zombie?) has taken the effort to reply, I hope at least one has read it. So I am really questioning myself whether I should bother at all and remain in that (SLEEPY!) CC.

Thx for your comment, hear ya soon!

    Dear Robbie,

Great comment there! Indeed the forums are very rarely used (specially in my CC) and therefor there is practically no communication, so no cohesion or inside thoughts with players, active players who wanna do more then just trying to boost statistics.

I am thinking very hard of making a change in the very near future, I am fed up with my (almost zombie) club!

    Dear Alosso,

It is always nice to earn a little extra and with my level of play, I cannot complain about that yet I also keep an open mind in participating only. Fun indeed should outweigh the search for money. Therefor I do wanna play far more torunaments and have far more competition around me. I am considering a new AND active CC very soon!

    Thx for your comment!

One important advantage of paid country club tournaments, with a payout in the form of credits, is that the other players are members of your club, so they are all somehow "checked," reliable players, and presumably not cheating, sandbagging etc.

One of the main problems people complain about with the main WGT ready-go tournaments is that anyone (including cheaters, sandbaggers, multiple accounts) could sign up for them and possibly unfairly take credits from other players.

Something, indeed anything for country clubs would be welcomed by all.
