That's for posting this. I'll take a proper look later.

I've recently got the fewer than 24 putts in a round award a couple of times so I'm doing something right.

I finally decided to give it a shot and the math isn't that difficult actually.   Perhaps I just used the least amount of info to see if it worked.

In my replay here,  the putt was 30ft 5inches downhill.    All dots where breaking at similar speed.   Figuring 2 ft per grid square,  a 30 foot putt would have 15 parallel lines.

This is what my math looked like:  Total of dot-speed  30 (estimated a value of 2 per dot since they were moving at same pace across the line of the putt) , then mutiplied that 30 by 35ft (  downhill putt so I added the 5inches of downhill elevation since downhill breaks more)  so,  30x35=1050.........  then divided 1,050 by 15( #of parallel lines between ball and cup) ......1050/15 = 70   (70 being the break value)   and since each grid square is measured to 30   that would mean that my aim line would be just a little more than 2 grid squares right of hole.

After that, it's just like any other putt, figure out your speed of the putt and hope you hit the ding lol.

    G0LD:

You must determine the fraction that the slope (6 inches) and the stated distance (13 feet) together represent: 1/2.16. You then multiply 43.43 by this fraction (43.43 X 1/2.16 = 43.43/2.16), and add the product of this multiplication (20.11) to 43.43, which gives 63.5

Would this not be less complicated and about as accurate to do this as a decimal:

    6inches divided by the distance 13ft= 6/13= 0.4615... multiplied by our original 43.43= 20.0446

    43.43+20.0446= 63.4746

Yes the numbers are a little different but while putting I haven't seen that they are that off if at all.

    Woodoworkery:

Gold, just wondering how long does it take you to figure out where to move the marker?

Woodo., it all depends. I'm slow to begin with, and some complicated - painfully hard to read, when front and reverse views are inconsistent - downward putts do take a couple of minutes to figure out.

vFire., no offense, but to me your modified calculation is not less complicated. If, however, it is to you, and the end result is satisfactory, then go for it, with my blessings.

hpurey, lovely putt, indeed! A joy to watch. Kudos to you! Great work.

I do see, however, that you didn't factor in the fraction 5/30 to add to the end break numerical value. What speed was the green? Did you slightly overshoot your target, thereby straitening the putting line, enough to go in?

Well thanks for the post. It is at first daunting to say the least, but after several times of doing it it does get easier. I would say it has definitely helped my reading of the greens. Now if I could just hit the dang ding all would be well in the world. :^)

Just a quick note on dings.I almost always (unless on very short or too long putts) use the 50ft scale. This makes it easier for me to ding the putt as the meter is slower.

Makes it harder to get the pace right but I can live with that.

    Valuable suggestion, thanks, salt.
